The View: Did ‘Insane’ GOP Prove How Racist They Are With Jackson Questions?

For Tuesday’s edition of The ViewABC called in Democratic Senator Cory Booker, NJ (Democratic Senate) to heap praise on him and attack Republicans who dared ask questions during last week’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings. Of course, there was no mention of the White House’s reported omission of Jackson’s history of light sentences for child porn offenders when handing her records over to the Senate.

Booker’s appearance was an especially exciting moment for Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of the show. “You were speaking for a lot of people who watched those hearings last week with that speech,” she touted. After that, she lamented. “we heard a lot of craziness” Coming from Republicans, and she “knew it was going to be odd but this was a little crazier.”

“What made this so insane to you,”She wanted to find out.

Booker suggested Republican questions were insane because Jackson was just such “an unassailable candidate” and “perhaps one of the most qualified people ever to be put on the court[.]” “She is just a magnificent human being,” he declared.

And in a statement that also applied to conservative Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, though he didn’t seem to realize it, Booker opined about how people “can relate” to Jackson “in a sense to being in a room where you are overqualified to be in the room and still have people come at you with such toxic nonsense.”

“So, it was a powerful moment for me to witness her excellence, despite those folks who tried to pull her down,” Booker added.

Up next was co-host Sunny Hostin who needed to let Booker know “you made me cry the ugly cry” when he defended Jackson during the hearing. “You defended her. This was quite something. And in defending her, you mentioned how she reminded you of your mom, your cousins, your ancestors,” she lauded.

But Hostin ultimately had a bone to pick with Booker because she didn’t like how he wouldn’t overtly call Republicans racist in a CNN interview:

Now, Later, you told CNN’s Dana Bash you did not believe racism was involved with the questions she received from your Republican colleagues. She was interrupted several times, her credibility was challenged, questions were raised about her hidden agendas and Senator Cruz asked her to explain Critical Race Theory. She was, at least I think it was Senator Kennedy who said that she was articulate.

“Is it still your view that race had nothing to do with the way she was treated,” Sie pressed.

Booker defended himself by arguing that he didn’t say they weren’t racist, just that he didn’t want to give an answer. “No, that’s not the conclusion I was drawing with Dana Bash at all. I think my point was I can’t get into the heads of my colleagues, nor do I want to go down that odyssey,” he said.

He then proceeded to describe Republican questions as having “a complete lack of decency.” Although, he did note that he was talking about “some, not all of my Republican colleagues – not even the majority of them but some of them – was a complete lack of decency, a big lack of respect.”

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Good morning, Senator Booker!

GOOD MORNING SEN. CORY BYER (D–NJ) Good morning.

GOLDBERG. You spoke for many people watching those hearings last Thursday with the speech. There was a lot more craziness from the opposite side. Although I was aware it would be strange, this seemed even more crazy. This was what made it so crazy to you.

BOOKER : It’s the unassailable nature of her candidacy. She’s perhaps one of the most qualified people ever to be put on the court, having served at multiple levels of our federal judiciary from a Supreme Court clerk to a circuit court judge. Her personality is simply amazing.

That feeling is common for many of us. We can all relate to the sensation of being overqualified and having people bombard you with toxic comments. It was an amazing moment to see her excel, in spite of those who attempted to drag her down.

SUNNY HOSTIN: Uh, Senator, you know, you made me cry the ugly cry when – with your words that day. She was defended by you. This was amazing. You also mentioned that she was reminding you of your mother, your cousins and your ancestors in defense.

Later, she said to CNN’s Dana Bash you did not believe racism was involved with the questions that were given her by some of your Republican counterparts. She was interrupted repeatedly, her credibility was challenged, questions were raised about her hidden agendas and Senator Cruz asked her about Critical Race Theory. Senator Kennedy, I believe she said, was clear. Are you still of the opinion that racism had no bearing on how she was treated?

BOOKER: That’s not what I meant to conclude with Dana Bash. My point was that I couldn’t reach the minds of my coworkers and I don’t want to embark on this odyssey.

What we saw on display, whatever language you want to put on it, was a complete lack of decency from some, not all of my Republican colleagues – not even the majority of them but some of them – was a complete lack of decency, a big lack of respect. Let’s just call it what it is.

We now know in just a clarity for all America to see that a Supreme Court justice of her import – excuse me a Supreme Court nominee of her import was treated with a way that not just disrespectful and ugly, but also in a way that for me violates – I don’t care if you’re a Republican or Democrat – all of our national sense of decency.

TARA SETMAYER. So let’s talk about a moment not to be proud of. What is happening with Republicans and January 6 Committee. Yesterday, a Federal Judge ruled that Trump had likely broken the law in his attempt to illegally block Congress.

[Crosstalk]

SETMAYER : He’s been given a directive to turn over documents. We’ve witnessed him repeatedly stall and try to evade. There has been growing dissatisfaction with Merrick Garland, the Attorney General and the Department of Justice. Is there any evidence that this could spark action in the Department of Justice and bring about accountability? What’s happening with DOJ?

BOOKER We’re all eagerly awaiting the December 6 report from the committee. According to conversations with Congresspeople, they believe that there is a lot evidence supporting illegal conduct. I believe that when this information is presented to the public you’ll see law enforcement agencies taking steps.

The gravity of what happened; I was standing – I was in this building when it was under assault. This was probably the worst time of my life. Especially when I saw police officers being injured and we left that building. Brian Sicknick from New Jersey died that day. After returning to my desk, I turned on the television and saw the Confederate flag, followed by racist and antisemitic hate posters, being displayed in the capital.

It was a violent, tragic and low-point in American history. Let us investigate the matter and hold all those responsible, as no one is above law except the former President of United States.

JOY BEHAR: We are grateful.
