The Rooney Rule: Woke Gesture Or Legitimate Solution?

Recently, the NFL announced their annual report on which teams will get compensatory draft picks to help them in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The NFL awards teams with draft picks to help teams make up for the loss of players during the free agency period of the offseason (hence the word, “compensatory”). There is one way that teams could earn compensatory picks. That is, if minority coaches are hired elsewhere.

ESPN reported that six franchises were selected in the third round for former coaches who filled the vacancies of general managers and head coaches.

There are many social justice undertones in the NFL today. One might think that rewarding black coaches to get into the NFL may be another example. Do we need to look at the Rooney Rule with a skewed brow and accept it as another instance of wakefulness by the NFL

We should be happy that this is not yet another equity-based, nauseating gesture.

The NFL Operations website explains the motivation behind the Rooney Rule.

“The Rooney Rule is one part of the NFL’s effort to develop a deep, sustainable talent pool at all levels of the organization. This policy encourages diversity in leadership within NFL clubs so that talented candidates can prove their skills and abilities to succeed.

The Rooney Rule encourages minority candidates to be hired as head coaches, general managers, or executive roles. The diversity of the players enriches and makes for a better organization.

Obviously, words like “diversity” and equating diversity with making your organization more successful reeks of wokeness. Your organization’s quality is not dependent on the color of its people. It depends upon how well they work together to reach a common goal.

The fact that 19 years have passed has made a huge difference. Many people now see this as a sign of racism in the NFL. (Enter Brian Flores). This would make the Rooney Rule look like an intelligent solution to a serious problem. The Rooney Rule, while it was intended to give equal opportunities to minorities candidates (which is something all businesses should do for their employees), does not guarantee an equally successful outcome. Additionally, the rule was created in 2003, back when we didn’t have to worry about the NFL selling out for the woke agenda.

We should once again give credit to the NFL for managing a crisis that they felt they had to solve. They quietly have found a way of incentivizing teams to get the desired outcome, even though it didn’t wake them up.
