You don’t want to live in the state of garbage politicians. California has Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell as the infectors. Lorena Gonzalez is the state’s liar. Gonzalez is both a state assembly hack and a union leg-humper. She’s face to face with an ethics allegation that my buddy Jennifer Oliver O’Connell covered.
Gonzalez was responsible for the accruable abomination, also known as AB5. AB5 was a gift for unions. It basically banned all freelance work with a few exceptions. It was designed to force freelancers into W2 jobs when they had no desire to be someone’s employee. Joe Biden loves AB5
AB5 was a disaster for the freelancer industry and left hundreds of thousands, if not even millions, of them on the sidelines. One of them was me.
The LA Times’ sports cartoonist in 2020 was me. AB5 was enacted that year. While the bill made exceptions to favor independent contractors such as lawyers, it did not include my freelancing position of newspaper cartoonist. AB5 established a limit on submissions of 35, which is absurd and arbitrary. Where did “35” come from? Gonzalez just picked it out of thine own imagination. That’s how she legislates. When she is not marching with union thugs, she’s throwing darts at a dartboard to decide the fate of freelancers.
I was sidelined while Gonzalez and her union handlers wrote another bill to “fix” the massive problems with AB5. That’s like fixing Frankenstein’s raging monster with a Tylenol. It helped me, but it didn’t help others.
The absurdly titled “Build Back Better” includes a national version of AB5. PRO Act does not use the IRS test to establish freelance status. It uses an ABC test. Many union paragons claim that freelancers are safe, but Joe Biden won’t budge on his ABC test. There’s a reason why. This will both hurt freelancers and benefit unions. AFL-CIO and other unions assure freelancers they don’t have to worry. That’s like Ted Bundy telling a nurse to close her eyes — she has nothing to fear. The PRO Act can be a job killer even for Democrats.
The cost of a canary at a coal mine was AB5. This was the canary in the coal mine that decimated freelance jobs. Joe Biden caused enough economic damage by creating more money in Amazon than ever before and leading to runaway inflation. The PRO Act as written will blow up the gig economy — and the economy in general will suffer, if it becomes law.
