The Michigan Governor’s Race for the Republicans Is Finally Ready to Take Off – Opinion

Michigan, for all those who wish Gretchen Whitmer to be defeated has seen this happen over a long period.

After what seemed to be endless snafus for the past six months, it looks like the Michigan Grand Old Party–and their candidates vying to see who will face off against Governor Gretch in November–are about ready to take off. Only 46 days remain before the August primary. The November election is 143 days away.

Christopher Arps (my colleague) wrote last week here that the signature fraud has effected some candidate withdrawals. The Michigan Signature Petition Fraud is Widespread). It seems that the Feds have decided to arrest the candidate running in the Jan 6th Capitol Riot, according to Streiff’s blog. FBI arrests Republican Candidate for Michigan Governor Over January 6 Misdemeanors. This is what that means for 2024.

According to Streiff’s article, it seems people running for Governor on the Republican side are not the sole focus of the feds.

Federal agents arrested Peter Navarro last Friday as he tried to board a Nashville-bound plane. The offense was a single count of contempt of Congress brought on by Navarro’s insistence, to the extent of filing a federal lawsuit against the January 6 Committee, that his conversations with President Trump were covered by executive privilege. After being handcuffed and placed on leg irons at the airport, Navarro denied him communications with his lawyer. Then he was taken to DC and strip-searched before being put into a cell. Later that day, he appeared before a federal magistrate and was released on his own recognizance—definitely a hardened criminal.

The remaining Michigan candidates are getting ready for the campaign leading up to August 2nd. Whitmer’s opponent will then be selected. The GOP race will tighten up as we get closer to August, and the party will need to get behind the nominee ASAP–being Whitmer is not as damaged as some of her fellow Democrats are across the country.

An earlier poll was discussed in the Washington ExaminerHere’s a glimpse of what makes Michigan so bizarre.

In a mid-May survey commissioned for the Detroit Regional Chamber, President Joe Biden’s job approval rating in this key Midwestern battleground was an abysmal 36% among registered voters, with 55% disapproving. Additionally, 69% of Michigan voters said the United States is on the “wrong track,” with only 17% believing the country is on the “right track.”

Numbers like that usually portend defeat for the party in power — and Democrats are in charge, both in Washington, D.C., and in the Michigan governor’s mansion and other top state constitutional offices in Lansing. This survey, which was conducted between May 9-13, also showed a favorable outcome for Democrats in Michigan. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s job approval rating is a respectable 49%, with 41% disapproving.

“The bad news is [Whitmer’s] party is in power, and the voters are very angry over the economy,” Richard Czuba, founder of the Lansing-based Glengariff Group, which conducted the poll, told the Detroit News.

The Governor of Michigan is an avid supporter Joe Biden as well as every failure policy that his White House has proposed. How can he get to a state with a mere 49 percent approval? My home state, as I mentioned earlier, can sometimes be quite odd.

Mind-boggling that Governor Trump, who accomplished all of these feats in two years ago, now has 50 percent support from any poll.

Michigan House Member Drops DOJ Investigation on Whitmer Nursing Home

Consider this: Michigan’s Governor

  • COVID was clearly a reactionary event. They shut down businesses and encouraged citizens to pay fines for those who resist.
  • She demanded shelter for the people living here, and chartered a private plane to fly to Florida with her staff.
  • Charlie LeDuff is currently investigating who else may have been pushed into nursing homes during COVID.

There is no chance of reelection.

These are the reasons why it’s important that all candidates for the GOP nomination have an honest discussion and contest to see who is the best candidate to beat Whitmer in November. Michigan has gone backwards over the past three-and-a-half years of the Whitmer Administration; we can’t afford to continue to tread water like this.

I’m no longer a registered Republican, and declared my Independence and embraced my libertarian streak many years ago. To vote for Michigan Governor, this is the first time I have voted for the GOP. The Republican nominee will need to convince people like me who are not Republicans or Democrats to support them.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next month and a half with people who hope to beat Whitmer in November.

I have invited all the candidates to answer the questions I have sent them and to appear on my radio show on WAAM 1600 A.M. & 92.7 F.M. in Ann Arbor Michigan. These interviews will be posted here so that you can hear the thoughts of those candidates.

After all, the Great Lakes State deserves a Governor that is greater than the one we have now–and even though the bar is pretty low now, Michigan truly deserves better.

Let’s hope that happens.
