The FBI’s raid on the home of former President Donald Trump shocked the nation on Monday evening. The news that Trump’s agents had entered his Mar-a-Lago home set off a firestorm on the internet and airwaves.
Discussion and debate continue to rage as talking heads, politicians, and other members of the chattering class speculate on the potential impact of the Bureau’s investigation. Amazingly, Trump and Republicans are yet to feel the impact of this development from a political perspective.
As RedState’s Streiff reported, two Republican candidates with Trump’s blessing won their primary races in Wisconsin and Washington. “In Wisconsin, Rebecca Kleefisch picked up 42% of the vote to come in second to Tim Michels’ 47%,” Streiff wrote. “Recent polls had shown Kleefisch and Michels running neck-and-neck. Kleefisch, the ex-Lietenant Governor of Wisconsin was supported by Scott Walker and Mike Pence. President Trump endorsed Michels.”
In Connecticut, Leora Levy, the former president’s pick for Senate, won her primary. She won 50% of total votes.
There has not been any new polling to test Trump’s approval rating after the FBI raid. It is easy to see that Trump hasn’t lost any support, if you keep your finger on social media and the conservative bases. This fiasco doesn’t seem to have affected many people at all.
This could be because we all know that this raid is a disaster. Even some Democrats have admitted that it is coming off like a politically-motivated attack on a former president. It’s not crazy to imagine that many more Democrats feel the same, even if they will not say so publicly.
This brings me to a point I’ve been hammering home constantly: Attorney General Merrick Garland could have made a massive mistake by allowing this raid to take place. This raid is extremely risky. It could be a profitable move if the agents uncover evidence that Trump committed a grave crime or someone within his circle. The evidence could suffice to indict Trump or someone within his circle. Although it might not end in a conviction this would be sufficient political damage to keep him from taking over the White House.
But if they just find documents that shouldn’t have been handed to the National Archive then there will be a serious blowback to both the Biden government and to the Democratic Party. It will be without any credibility left.
Trump is expected to sail into the White House even more. If the DOJ doesn’t have evidence of serious wrongdoing, they may have just given the Orange Man What Is Bad™ the biggest favor any president has ever received outside of Marilyn Monroe.
