June marks LGBTQI+ Pride Month — a month honoring those who are “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex.” This ever-expanding rubric revolves around a particular value system entirely embraced by the modern Left: the notion that a person’s core identity ought to lie not in the relationship between individual desires and societal duties, but instead ought to revolve around a subjective sense of self, unverifiable by the world at large and justified against all societal roles and rules.
White House has confirmed this statement by President Joe Biden. In a proclamation urging Americans to “wave their flags of pride high” — it is worth noting that an entire side of the political aisle in the United States now finds the so-called pride flag far less controversial than the American flag itself — Biden stated, “This month, we remind the LGBTQI+ community that they are loved and cherished. My administration sees you for who you are — deserving of dignity, respect and support.”
However, to truly see people for what they are requires an objective standard. It’s literally impossible for someone to be who he thinks he is just by looking at his internal perception. Biden has used perfectly Orwellian exaggerations to claim that everyone should be able to confirm their own perceptions of any other he, her, xe, or cat.
This is a completely uncoherent perspective. Ironically, the incoherence of this perspective is revealed by the conflict among the letters within the alphabet soup that includes the so-called sexually marginalized. An argument for tolerating lesbian and homosexual Americans was that biological drives shouldn’t be controlled by society as such drives are inborn and innate. That idea, however, had at least the benefit of being internally consistent. However, this idea is now being recast as the belief that biology does not hold us and we should be able to choose our biology and change our sexual orientation and gender. Homosexual orientation relies on the continued distinction between the sexes — after all, why prefer males or females if those sexes are mere social constructs? Transgenderism is based on the absolute flexibility of sex. This is the reason that so-called TERFs — “trans-exclusionary radical feminists!” — are so bewildered by the suddenly mainstream view that women’s rights ought to be extended to biological men.
The White House tells us that we should ignore all the contradictory Left-wing sexual ideologies and just pretend to be coherent. People tell us we should support women’s rights, and we hear that Lia Thomas can be considered a woman. They also insist that you don’t need to be biologically female in order to be lesbian. However, we are taught that biology is an indicator of behavior. This makes no sense. However, we should feel proud because it allows us to live in our authenticity and not be restricted by society.
This kind of illogic can quickly turn into chaos. It is difficult to talk coherently to one another without objective meaning. To suggest that everyone in the world owes us validation of our deepest desires and needs is an invitation to chaos. Unity is only possible when there’s opposition — in this instance, opposition to institutions, tradition and roles that support human flourishing.
