The broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) routinely exercise their power to raise local stories to national attention when they decide it helps the narrative, or squash it if it doesn’t. So, obviously, the Wednesday terroristic threats from the city’s Black Lives Matter leader, Hawk Newsome, who said his group would bring “riots,” “fire,” and “Bloodshed” (emphasis his) if Mayor-elect Eric Adams (D) tried to bring back the “anti-crime” unit were conspicuously absent Thursday evening.
While they were ignoring how the socialist-extremist organization was threatening to launch terrorist attacks on New York City, ABC’s World News Tonight, CBS Evening NewsAnd NBC Nightly NewsThey were busy talking about the snow conditions in the Midwest. They also lamented how an appeals court temporarily blocked the January 6 committee from accessing former President Trump’s documents from the National Archives.
As we have discussed, The NewsBusters PodcastTheir ability to influence the reach and coverage of local stories is especially evident when they are based in New York City. ABC has literally covered traffic accidents and other incidental happens in the city as if they’re worth national attention.
So, it was left up to Fox News Channel’s America ReportsTheir filter to the wind. “The head of New York’s Black Lives Matter movement promising ‘bloodshed,’ ‘riots,’ and ‘fire’ if the city’s incoming mayor, Eric Adams follows through on his plan to crack down on a violent crime,” announced co-anchor John Roberts.
“Now, BLM laid out their policy demands of Adams for helping the black community including the expectation that there will be police reform that disbands police unions and audits the NYPD,” reported correspondent Bryan Llenas, noting the group was “unsatisfied with the Mayor’s lack of guarantees.” Which led to this recorded, public threat:
NEWSOME (BLM Greater New York Chapter). Fire, riots and violence will all be part of the mix. BloodshedYou can!
Llenas then recalled Newsome’s history of encouraging violence for his political cause. “Now, during the height of the violent unrest of the summer of 2020, Newsom said violence is sometimes necessary,” Llenas recounted.
BLM sent these threats to Adams because Adams is a retired NYPD officer and wanted to take down the rampant crime in the area. And to draw attention to those local crime stories, Roberts and co-anchor Jacqui Heinrich read through a few heinous ones (Click “expand”):
ROBERTS: Even now – just a few examples of that crime: a 37-year-old man says he was beaten by a group of four people outside of a trendy Manhattan restaurant all because, he says, he asked them to stop harassing somebody.
HEINRICH – A woman was beaten in an elevator at a metro station. The attacker attacked her and then pulled her by the feet.
ROBERTS – A 62 year-old man was struck with a baseball bat, then stabbed and slashed in midtown Manhattan, not by one criminal, but by seven vicious attackers.
HEINRICH: These stories and countless others are leaving New Yorkers begging for a bigger police presence…
As for Adams’ response to the threats, he seemed to downplay them. “We’re going to have the backs of our police officers, but we’re going to hold them accountable to do their jobs. And so, if fringe elements want to hurl rhetoric it like that, that’s silly to New Yorkers,” he said in a soundbite.
“Look, Jacqui, it is a tight rope for Adams. He ran as a moderate pro-cop Democrat in a very progressive city while at the same time promising to hold those police accountable,” Llenas noted as he wrapped up. “He’s not even in office yet and already we have the fireworks between him and BLM.”

November 11, 2021
Eastern, 2:01:37JOHN ROBERTS: The head of New York’s Black Lives Matter movement promising “bloodshed,” “riots,” and “fire” if the city’s incoming mayor, Eric Adams follows through on his plan to crack down on a violent crime.
JACQUI HEINRICH: Eric Adams, New York City’s mayor-elect and a former police captain himself, had pledged to bring back a version of the NYPD anti-crime unit. That group was disbanded by the NYPD under Bill de Blasio in 2013 and hundreds were transferred amid protests over defunding of police. The city’s violent crime has continued to rise and has not stopped.
ROBERTS: A 62-year old man was stabbed with a bat and then slashed in Midtown Manhattan by seven men.
HEINRICH: These stories and countless others are leaving New Yorkers begging for a bigger police presence, but the Black Lives Matter leader says, if the old NYPD comes back, they’re taking to the streets. (…) But first, we want to go to Bryan Llenas in New York City with this story for us. Hey, Bryan.
BRYAN LLENAS: Jacqui, good afternoon. Eric Adams, New York City’s mayor-elect promised today, despite threats, that New York would not be “a city of rioting or will not burn”. Adams met Hawk Newsome yesterday, co-founder and chief executive of the Black Lives Matter chapter. It was an informal meeting lasting half an hour and the live stream was available on Instagram.
BLM presented Adams’ policy demands for Adams, which included the demand that police reform be implemented that dissolves unions of police officers and audits NYPD. But unsatisfied with the Mayor’s lack of guarantees, the BLM leader, Hawk Newsome made this threat right after the meeting.
HAWK NEWSOME (BLM Greater New York Chapter). If the police think that they will go back to their old methods of doing business, we will take to the streets. There will be violence, riots and fire.
LLENAS: Newsom claimed violence was sometimes needed during the violent unrest in 2020. Adams’ response to today’s threat is as follows.
MAYOR-ELECT ERIC ADAMS (D-NYC): We’re going to have the backs of our police officers, but we’re going to hold them accountable to do their jobs. And so, if fringe elements want to hurl rhetoric it like that, that’s silly to New Yorkers.
LLENAS: Adams accused of Newsome of, quote, “showboating” and said while he downplayed the organization as not representative of the entire Black Lives Matter movement.
HEINRICH – Wow Bryan! What is the reaction – or what is the criticism rather of Black Lives Matter’s towards Eric Adams? Is there a problem?
LLENAS : Let’s face it, that is the truth. Eric Adams is a former NYPD captain. On top of that, he’s somebody who campaigned on bringing back the anti-gang, anti-criminal plainclothes police units that were disbanded in 2020.
BLM, Newsome and BLM argued against these units, saying that they cause deaths such as Eric Garner. Eric Adams, however, today stood by his position. Listen.
ADAMS: If the bad guys know that the only thing they have to look after – out for are those in blue and white cars, we’re at a disadvantage. That is the reason you need to have the unpredictability of public safety and policing, and the unmarked vehicle. This keeps bad guys in check.
LLENAS: Adams is clearly arguing that plainclothes units in order to combat the rise in crime in this area are essential.
Jacqui! It is not an easy task for Adams. While running as a moderate, pro-cop Democrat in a progressive city, he also promised to hold the police responsible. Even though he is not yet in office, we already see fireworks between him as well as BLM. Jacqui.
HEINRICH – Wow. It’s amazing. Bryan Llenas is a New York City resident. Many thanks.
