Study: Twitter’s ‘Liberal’ Content Turned Voters Away From Trump

Princeton researchers have found that moderate voters voted against Donald Trump in a recent study.

Since long, social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook have had complex relationships with politicians. The nearly 90-page study detailed social media’s effect on elections throughout the United States and concluded that the platforms negatively impacted a moderate voter’s choice when it came to voting for a Republican or Democrat.

“We study how social media affects election outcomes in the United States,” the study said. “We use variation in the number of Twitter users across counties induced by early adopters at the 2007 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, a key event in Twitter’s rise to popularity.”

To show and explain how moderates voted, the study utilized graphs and maps.

“Twitter’s relatively liberal content may have persuaded voters with moderate views to vote against Donald Trump,” the study said.

Indeed, the study from the Ivy League school suggested that Twitter “lowered” the Republican vote share in both 2016 and 2020.

“Our results indicate that Twitter lowered the Republican vote share in the 2016 and 2020 presidential election.”
