Digital Vaccine Passport Quietly Rolls Out

Although the federal government has not utilized vaccine passports to prove that someone has been vaccinated against COVID-19, some states are quietly using “SMART Health Cards.”

According to ForbesA SMART Health Card, which can also be used in Puerto Rico and District of Columbia, is currently being used by 21 states. Microsoft and Salesforce are the key stakeholders.

“We’ve seen a notable uptick in states that have officially launched public portals where individuals can get verifiable vaccination credentials in the form of SMART Health Cards with a QR code,” Dr. Brian Anderson, co-founder of Vaccine Credential Initiative (VCI), said of the efforts.

The popularity of digital cards has increased. A QR code scanner was used by the Kennedy Center, Washington D.C. to scan various vaccine credential platforms.

“The SMART Health Card is such an important development and the Vaccine Credential Initiative has been phenomenal in getting this out there,” Gus Warren, the CEO of Bindle, said of his health verification app. The SMART Health Card is the most crucial, he said. “Absolutely, it has become the standard across the U.S. and North America.”

Still, some argued the card is not a “vaccine passport.”

“This isn’t a passport,” South Carolina’s director of immunizations told Politico. “This is essentially a Covid card that people get at their convenience because it’s their record.”

Anderson said that international popularity has increased for the cards.

“And at an international level, we are continuing to see intense interest in a coordinated international approach,” says Anderson. “And that has not diminished at all. I think quite the opposite.”

He also maintained that these efforts weren’t political.

“The idea of being able to have trustworthy copies of your own health records is not a red or blue state issue,” Anderson said. “It is an individual empowerment of your own health data. What we’re going to see over the next month is a growing number of red states recognizing and appreciating the importance of empowering their individual citizens in their states.”
