Stelter Ranks U.S. Among China, Belarus as Worse Press Jailers

In a stark example of just how detached from reality folks in the liberal media can be, CNN media beat reporter Brian Stelter actually tried to place America among a list of the world’s worst press jailers for 2021. His list featured Belarus and China among others. Trustworthy SourcesJoel Simon, executive director of Committee to Protect Journalism, hosts Sunday Show.

Stelter asked Simon to go through the entire list and determine who was the most intolerant. “Well, China is the number one jailer of journalists. And China perennially tops this list,” he said.

Belarus was at the top of the list. “Belarus where the — where the ongoing crackdown on independent media and civil society as Lukashenko clings to power in that country. Journalists are being caught up,” Simon recalled.

Simon also expressed concern about the fact that the list was growing as countries crack down on media. “Myanmar, a place where we saw some progress. Of course, it’s become now one of the most repressive — one — among the world’s leading jailers of journalists,” he said. “There are sweeping crackdowns in Ethiopia.”

Stelter began to disparage America a mere few moments later, as he was changing the topic.

You know what? Even in the United States, there are a lot of journalists who are caught up in protests or other events, and get arrested.

Stelter knows what he’s saying. Stelter intentionally conjured arrests from all of these countries as one.

China and Belarus jail journalists who are arrested for being political prisoners. They are often subject to cruel treatment while in captivity. In the general instances Stelter mentioned, they’re released relatively quickly, usually with no charges, and aren’t specifically targeted.

Simon’s comments about the motivation behind journalists being arrested in other countries are a good example of this.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to avoid the negative news. Governments realized that they are in an existential struggle over information and narrative control. They are now waging an aggressive assault on independent journalism all over the globe.

Brian says that we are witnessing record-breaking numbers of journalists around the world being imprisoned and setting new records each year. We see new records every year.

Even in the Trump years, we didn’t even see an organized effort from the federal government to jail journalists. It’s an alternate reality Stelter, CNN,And the rest of liberal media like to pretend exists in the U.S. so they can feel endangered.

BRIAN STELTER – I hate to begin with the bad news, but this is a dangerous time. What’s been changing in recent years? What is the reason for darker landscapes?

JOEL SIMON Dir. Committee to Protect Journalists (Direk.): The bad news is inevitable. Governments realized that they are in an existential struggle over information and narrative control. They are now waging an aggressive assault on independent journalism all over the globe.

We are seeing that there is a record number of journalists around the globe being held in prison and setting records every year. We see new records every year.

STELTER: Hmm.

SIMON: Journalists are being subject to violence with impunity. The environment in which journalists work around the globe has never been more hazardous or dangerous. The world is at an important crossroads.

STELTER – Let’s now look at five journalists who have been imprisoned in the most infamous jails. Is there a country that ranks number 1 on this list of countries?

SIMON: China is number one for jailing journalists. China is the number one jailer of journalists. Brian said that it is alarming to see the rise in crackdowns across the globe. Many — even new — countries are doing this. Myanmar is a country where some progress was made. This is a place where we saw some progress.

STELTER (Due to the military coup of this year.

SIMON: Due to the military coup.

STELTER: Belarus also appears on this list.

SIMON: Belarus is where there are ongoing restrictions on civil society and independent media as Lukashenko, who holds onto power in the country. Journalists are getting caught.

Ethiopia has been subject to sweeping crackdowns. Many countries across the globe are imposing severe restrictions on freedom of expression. Independent journalism is being repressed by governments who use all the power they have. This is why year after year we see record numbers.

STELTER – I already mentioned Mexico City as a topic on violence. Mexico: We continue to see a shocking number of journalists murdered in Mexico.

SIMON: Yes. Mexico is the country with the greatest death rate in the entire hemisphere. Another country that is afflicted by violence every year. It is drug traffickers who are largely involved in the collusion of a government. They are protected from this violence.

Brian corruption is a worldwide problem. This is probably the most serious story. Not just corrupt people, but also the government networks that support organized crime in many countries. This is a dangerous and important story.
