As MSNBC continues its constant attack on all branches of Christianity, whether it’s on Joy Reid’s show, Alex Wagner’s new prime-time show, or any other host or guest on that network, actor Shia LaBeouf opened up about his struggle and how conversion to Catholicism saved his life.
LaBeouf had been detained several times in 1996. He called it his darkest days. Converting to Catholicism was what helped him discover faith.
During an appearance on Bishop Barron Presents “Conversations at the Crossroads,” LaBeouf said:
“I had a gun on the table. I was outta here,” the “Holes” star admitted. “I didn’t want to be alive anymore when all of this happened. Shame like I had never experienced before — the kind of shame that you forget how to breathe. You don’t know where to go. You can’t go outside to get like, a taco. But I was also in this deep desire to hold on.”
He said that his mindset going into the film “Padre Pio” was focused on his career, not God.
He continued:
““It stops being this prep of a movie and starts being something that feels beyond all that … The reach-out had happened. I knew I was there. I did not know where I would go. This was my last stop. There was nowhere else to go — in every sense,”
LaBeouf added:
“I know now that God was using my ego to draw me to Him … Drawing me away from worldly desires. This was happening at the same time. It would not have given me the impetus to jump in my car and drive up. [to the seminary] if I didn’t think, ‘Oh, I’m gonna save my career.’”

While playing his role, LaBeouf noted he felt “tricked” by God. He elaborated, saying:
“And when I got here, a switch happened. It felt almost like Three Card Monte. It was like someone tricked me into it, it felt like … not in a bad way. In a way that I couldn’t see it. I was so close to it that I couldn’t see it. I see it differently now that time has passed.”
LaBeouf was charged with petty theft and battery – two misdemeanors – because he stole a man’s hat during a fight that turned physical. After the misdemeanors were committed, LaBeouf’s ex-girlfriend sued him and alleged that LaBeouf was abusive.
“It was seeing other people who have sinned beyond anything I could ever conceptualize also being found in Christ that made me feel like, ‘Ok well, that gives me hope.’”
“I started hearing experiences of other depraved people who had found their way in this, and it made me feel like I had permission.”
Barron ended by saying,
“It was a delight to sit down for an in-depth conversation with Shia LaBeouf, one of the most compelling actors of his generation … Shia is also a man with a fascinating story to tell regarding his spiritual journey. I think that anyone who is struggling to find the way to God will be interested in what he has to say.”
