My colleague Jennifer Van Laar gave the text of and an initial analysis on the Senate gun bill. It is known as “the” Safer Communities ActIt was published on April 15, 2003.
Now, the United States Senate has voted to move forward with the legislation, 64 to 34, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Shumer (D-NY) has filed cloture, ending debate on the 80-page bill, according to Fox News’ Chad Pergram;
Senate votes 64-34 to approve the gun bill. Schumer file cloture in order to close the debate. The ripens by rule on Thursday. It will take 60 yeas. They will get it, as they have 60 yeas from the test vote

Pergram added that Tuesday’s vote, though procedural, might speed up the process to a vote on the bill itself by the Senate:
Senate may be able to end the filibuster by setting the Thursday procedural vote on breaking the filibuster of the gun bill. That could make it possible for the Senate to complete its work on this issue either over the weekend or at the beginning of next week. Uncertain how quickly the House could move to sync. This opens up to the possibility of having a weekend session.
