Sam Bee Admits She Couldn’t Mock Andrew Cuomo, Her Audience Loved Him

Fox News’ Cortney O’Brien reports that Samantha Bee, a late night TBS comedian, knew enough about her left-wing audience to not pick on the “super-problematic Gov.” Andrew Cuomo. Bee claimed “I’ve learned, at All Frontal you should not have any heroes. Never believe in anyone, and then you’ll be fine.”

O’Brien pointed out that Bee has slobbered all over leftist politicians like Barack Obama, and Kamala Harris, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Ilhan Omar is welcome.

“So it’s not like — I was not a Cuomosexual, particularly,” Bee said. There were many occasions, in fact, when we had large, wide-ranging conversations during the pandemic about how to handle Cuomo. Because he’s super problematic. But the story about him out in the world was like, he’s a hero. And he’s the only person speaking about the pandemic in a fatherly way. He is our father and everything.”

“And so it felt.” [like] a place where it wasn’t quite the time to be like, hey, just like, check it out, he’s actually an a**hole,” she continued. “Our audience was the only thing we felt that we could miss. And people weren’t really there to hear that at that moment, so — Anyway, this is what happens.”

Swisher asked Bee, “So would it be possible to speak now?” Bee ruefully answered  “He’s an asshole. “He was terrible, horrible.”

Bee said her comedy is “fueled by outrage” and “very satisfying. I will say that it’s — like, it provides a catharsis, I think, in a dire set of circumstances.” The Texas anti-abortion statute has made her mad. She said, “I am terrified.”

BEE: I don’t know what to do. We don’t know what to do. We don’t know what to do! It’s funny, but many episodes are now ending with the message, “Write to your government officials!” Everyone, get some stamps! Write a lot of letters. And it’s so nerdy and boring. Civic engagement can be so dull and boring. To do this right you must be annoying. And so we’re being annoying all the time. And I don’t — I — literally, I’m not sure what else to do, except highlight this issue.”

Bee was asked by a reporter if Beto would be able to run for governor of Texas. She replied, “I would vote like, a paper plate stained with pizza over Greg Abbott.”

Swisher asked Bee if she was trying to be a comic or an advocate, or just a “funny advocate.” Bee said, “Maybe I’m a funny advocate I try to be humorous.”

Swisher asked Bee about Donald Trump and Bee replied, “I just want you to throw yourself off this platform.” I can’t believe you even said that.”

She added “When he got shut down off of social media, I had probably a 24-hour period where I just operated in a— kind of a fugue state of like, what am I enraged — I don’t know who I am — like, just wandering around a campfire. After about 24 hours I felt like this was f-king amazing. I feel a lot better.”

SWISHER: I want you to just say things — Trump.

BEE: Oh, God, go — disappear, please. Please disappear. Drop into the volcano. We are sorry.

SWISHER: That’s a good joke.

BEE: That’s not even a joke. That’s serious. That’s real life.
