Russia reportedly banned the BBC to stop the spread of so-called “misinformation” regarding its war against Ukraine.
According to ReutersPutin complained about the unfair coverage by western media outlets of the conflict.
Roskomnadzor Russia’s communications watchdog stated that Roskomnadzor had stopped the BBC, Voice of America/Radio Liberty, Deutsche Welle and other media outlets.
The watchdog stated that “access has been limited to a number of information resources owned foreigners.”
“The reason we restricted access to the information resources in the Russian Federation was their intentional and systematic circulation with false information.”
For its part, the BBC said it was not afraid of Russia’s censorship of the site and would not be deterred in its news reporting.
According to it, “Access to independent, accurate information should not be denied Russians, millions of which rely upon BBC News every week”.
We will keep trying to make BBC News accessible in Russia and around the globe.
An author pointed out how hypocritical it was that Putin could still have access to his twitter account, while Donald Trump was expelled.
“Russia has now banned the BBC and to stop the spread of “misinformation,” Vivek Ramaswamy tweeted. “Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin still continues to enjoy access to his Twitter account while the 45th U.S. President does not.”
