Ex-”Republican” Jennifer Rubin is so far to the left that she feels compelled to lecture the liberal media on how they’re too soft on Republicans. The Washington Post columnist appeared on MSNBC Saturday to preach to the choir about how the media needs to adopt “new rules” and treat Republicans like pariahs. Is she living in a cave?
Guest hosting Saturday’s Velshi, MSNBC contributor Maria Teresa Kumar was talking about Democrats moving to censure Arizona Republican Paul Gosar over his violent anti-AOC tweet. It was just a launch pad for describing all Republicans as violent, bloodthirsty extremists. The evidence is overwhelming. Parents standing up to radically left school boards. These people are “fascist!”
Kumar teed up Rubin to wail about how the GOP has embraced its “autocratic tendencies” [click “expand”]
Jennifer, your husband is a Republican. I am sorry if this sounds wrong. But then, there’s Steve Schmidt, who also happens to be a Republican. David Jolly is now a Democrat. Bill Kristol, who frequently corrects the actions of Republicans and George Will. There are a few Republicans that have raised the alarm about the fact that what’s happening in the top echelons and the increasingly lower levels of elected government, such as school boards, is unbalanced to the principles of the party. We need to talk about the anti-democratic and autocratic events that are taking place.Do you have any thoughts?
Reminding Kumar she was an “ex-Republican” she sneered that the GOP has been “tacitly encouraging and rationalizing violence” for “years.”
Rubin falsely complained that Republicans “whitewashed” the Jan. 6 riot, when actually Republicans did condemn the riot, which is a far cry from the endorsement or whitewashing the media and Democrats did towards Antifa and BLM riots in 2020.
Rubin was not sympathetic to parents upset at left-leaning school boards. She herself whitewashed the National School Boards Association together with Merrick Garland labeling parents as domestic terrorists to gripe about parent “temper tantrums:”
There has been an explosion in intimidation threats against local school board and voting officials. If the US Attorney General states that he is going to investigate, then you will have a complete temper tantrum among Republicans senators [mocking] ‘How dare you question parents!’ It is not questioning parents, it’s holding people responsible for violent threats and violent action.
Rubin then rallied media support to make Republicans fascist threats. “They have to stop treating Republicans like normal politicians!” she cried:
It is a part of that, and I think the mainstream media should be included. These media cover the issues, and then they go back to having Republicans appear on talk-shows and ask them questions about other topics. They should be allowed to voice their false grievances, rather than constantly questioning them about the reasons they allow this behavior. This is fascist behaviour. Fascist regimes practice this behavior. These regimes go beyond the limits of democratic and small-d acceptable methods to get their way. They use intimidation, threats and violence to get their way. This is unacceptable. It has been going on for years now in the Republican party…
….You also need to establish new rules and guidelines for media. It is unacceptable to treat Republicans like regular politicians. These aren’t normal politicians. It is unusual behavior. It is an entire party that indulges in creating absurd cultural memes, fanning violent behavior and coming up falsehoods.
Kumar agreed and even suggested that the right was responsible for mass murder.
Jennifer, you’re absolutely correct in what you say. This is an asymmetrical time and we must accept it as it is. I think oftentimes people say they’re just words, but let’s not forget the Tree of Life tragedy was based on inspiration from the former president. Inspiration from former President played out online, then turned offline into tragedy. This is what we witnessed in El Paso. You are correct. It is important to talk and create about what’s happening, before anyone gets hurt.
The media will bend over backwards to label all violence the right’s fault, even when inconvenient facts get in the way of their narrative, (such as the El Paso shooter being an eco-extremist.)

MARIA TERESA KUMAR: Jennifer Rubin (Washington Post Columnist, MSNBC Contributor and Author of Resistance: How women saved Democracy from Donald Trump) is joining me. Jennifer, I’d like to emphasize that. Thank you so much for being here. Jay Rosen was quoted in the New York Times as saying that the Republican party conversations are so dissimilar to current affairs. Jennifer, I believe you’re a Republican. Correct me if my misunderstandings are, but you have Steve Schmidt, who is no longer a Republican. David Jolly is now a Democrat. Bill Kristol, who frequently corrects the Republican actions. George Will. A group of Republicans are warning that the situation right now in the top echelons and the increasingly lower levels of elected government, such as schoolboards or other areas, is unbalanced to the principles of the party. We need to talk about the anti-democratic behavior that seems to be taking place. It also shows autocratic tendencies where members try to intimidate those who don’t share your views. Let’s talk about this.
JENNIFER RUBIN (Yes). JENNIFER RUBIN: Yes. I was an ex-Republican. I quit the party.
KUMAR: [chuckling]This is what I was trying to do.
RUBIN: I just wanted to clarify that. That’s it. For a long time, the Republican party has tacitly encouraged and justified violence. It all started in 2016, when Donald Trump encouraged his supporters to fight critics and hecklers. He also joked to police about giving them the right to arrest suspects. That continued all the way through January 6th to the point where now virtually the entire Republican party is whitewashing that affair, um trying to downplay it. Now you have not only Gosar, but people like Marjorie Taylor Greene and other people who use violent imagery who intimate violence will result if the elections don’t go their way. There has been an explosion in intimidation threats against local school board and voting officials. If the US Attorney General states that he is going to investigate, then you will have a complete temper tantrum among Republicans members of Congress. [mocking] ‘How dare you question parents!’ It is not questioning parents, it’s holding people responsible for violent threats and violent action. Why didn’t the Secret Service interview the congressman? This is supposed to be serious, even funny, pictures of attacks on the president and attacks against public officials. This is totally unacceptable.
This is what fascist regimes do. These regimes go beyond the limits of democratic and small-d acceptable methods to get their way. They use intimidation, threat, and violence to get their way. This is unacceptable. This has been happening for many years in the Republican Party.Number one I believe the House must do something. I believe they may get a few Republican votes. Each Congresswoman [Liz]It will be supported by Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, which would be very good for the health of both Congressman Cheney as well.
Also, I believe you need some ground rules for media. It is unacceptable to treat Republicans like regular politicians. These aren’t normal politicians. It is not common conduct. The party spends their time making up ridiculous cultural memes, inciting violence, and telling lies. The media is missing.
Jennifer, you’re absolutely correct in what you say. It is a time of asymmetrical events and it must be called such.
