While there have been many positive developments in the Republican Party’s strategy and fighting willingness over the years, certain establishment members still hold onto delusions. One of these is Sen. Thom Tillis.
With the border being completely overrun, Tillis has proposed an immigration “compromise” that adds up to a full-scale surrender. First, here are the details, and then we’ll get into why I say that.
! TILLIS outlines potential deal he’d like to cut w/ Durbin etc on immigration !
*Path to citizenship for DACA/eligibles
*Border security/port of entry upgrades
*Guest worker program to help restaurants, etc & *cut inflation*

On Thursday, a bipartisan group will gather to talk about options for approving immigration legislation in the coming year.
“The idea is to get as many bipartisan bills we can find that have goals that will add up to 60,” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said, referring to the Senate’s threshold for passing most legislation.
Sens. Sens. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R.Iowa), could also be present. All are members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which handles immigration policy…
…“We’re in a crisis here, we’ve got headwinds, we’ve got the threat of a recession,” he said. “This is the time to maybe set politics aside a little bit and get good policy in place so we can do our part to lessen the burden that people are feeling here in the country.”
Tillis said measures that could form the basis of a deal include a pathway to citizenship for so-called Dreamers — young immigrants brought to the U.S. as children — border security upgrades, and a guest-worker program to alleviate labor shortages in industries like restaurants.
You might have thought, based on my headline, that I would come to this place and reject any idea for immigration reform. That’s actually not my argument here. Right now, a strictly enforced guest worker program would be necessary. There are too few workers in low-end jobs and it’s helping drive up inflation for normal Americans. This program needs to be easily scaleable. If wages fall too quickly and Americans have difficulty finding jobs, it is time to stop such programs.
This is how the structure would look. No, it isn’t. It would instead be open to all and without any enforcement. The program could also become permanent, regardless of the employment situation. DACA is considered illegal. This law-breaking could only make illegal immigration worse and increase flow. It is absurd that Tillis and his friends even consider proposing this.
Finally, port of entry upgrades and border security enhancements are necessary but not enough to make any difference. Is anyone really convinced that Democrats will accept a border wall as a compromise? And tens or billions more in security measures. Don’t hold your breath. In exchange for Republicans relinquishing all their leverage, any agreement will provide border security but only a modest amount.
That brings me back to my final point. Any “deal” that doesn’t include asylum reform should be dead on arrival. Although this might upset people who are right-leaning, it is clear that we’re far beyond border security as a solution to the problem. It doesn’t matter how high you make the wall or how many agents you put on the Rio Grande, if our broken asylum continues to be a magnet for fraudulent claims that gain free entry into the country, nothing is going to change. In order to stop this flow, economic migrants need to be deported immediately.
This compromise would prove to be disastrous for Republicans. One, DACA should be off the table, and it’s essentially just Democrats buying votes knowing that’s a heavily liberal group. While a program for guest workers is required, it could also be used to strengthen border security. But reforming asylum processes does not constitute a surrender. Involving in such garbage is how Republicans lose in November. This is the classic GOP.
