Rep. Peter Meijer, a Republican representing Michigan’s 3rd district, is currently locked in a fierce primary battle with former Trump official John Gibbs. It is noteworthy that Meijer, a Republican from Michigan’s 3rd district, voted to impeach Donald Trump on January 20, 2021. That has resulted in some fascinating dynamics within the race.
One of the biggest issues is the large DCCC advertisement that promoted Gibbs for Trump. Although it may seem like an attack on Gibbs, the DCCC’s large ad buy promotes him as the Trump candidate. This follows the pattern of other Democrats who highlight Trump-endorsed candidates to help them win the primaries. The DCCC’s plan is to then turn around and accuse those very same candidates of being threats to “democracy,” with the idea being they are easier to beat.
That’s left Meijer, a “centrist” Republican, indignant that the Democrats would pull such an underhanded move against someone who joined them to impeach Trump. Seriously, his op-ed is one of the most pathetic I’ve ever read.
Peter Meijer is among the few Republicans that has taken a chance on his life to vote for Trump’s impeachment. The Democratic Party is spending a meaningful amount of money to help his primary opponent – who they will soon warn is an existential danger to democracy. https://t.co/gDIjn6L9Ot

Meijer opens by bragging that he was the “first incoming freshman” to recognize Biden’s “presidential victory.” I’m not sure why he thinks that’s noteworthy, but alright.
Tomorrow I’m facing off against John Gibbs in the Republican primary for Michigan’s Third Congressional District. This race is very close. We are close to one another according to internal polling. But Gibbs and I couldn’t be more different.
I stand firm in defense of the Constitution, and of the rule of law. Accordingly, I became the first incoming freshman to recognize former Vice President Biden’s presidential victory. Three days later, when I was sworn in as President in January 2021 I was present in the House Chamber during the riots that swept through the Capitol. One week later I was joined by nine Republicans including Liz Cheney to impeach Donald Trump. It was a difficult but determined decision. Only freshman has ever impeached a leader of his own party.
Gibbs was an ex-political appointee of Trump’s administration and denies results from the 2020 presidential election.
For me, the problem here isn’t that Meijer impeached Trump. If he really felt that was the right move, I’d disagree with him, but he was within his capacity as a House member to do so, and it’s possible for someone to be principled and wrong at the same time. What’s laughable, though, is how naive Meijer was in believing that such a move would insulate him.
He tries desperately to prove his virtue to Democrats, who want to end him. His op ed is nothing but political faltering. “I am the only freshman in history to impeach a president of his own party” he proclaims, making me wonder if he would like a cookie. Simply put, you should have sufficient self-respect not to be tempted to fall for your friends’ deceitful actions if you plan to impeach your party president based upon no evidence.
You would expect that Democrats would see John Gibbs as the manifestation of their greatest fears. That as patriots they would use every tool at their disposal to defeat him and similar candidates that they’ve said are an existential threat.
Instead, they fund Gibbs.
No, I wouldn’t think that. Who would believe that? Do you know the history behind the Democrat Party, Meijer? My gosh, dude, don’t just openly admit you have zero political acumen. Because they are supporting your opponent, Don’t worry about your feelings. You were never their concern. You were a useful idiot to put a “bipartisan” stamp on their ill-fated impeachment. They would throw you away as soon as you had outlived the point of your utility.
Honestly, it’s incredible to see Meijer beg and plead for fairness from a Democrat Party that was never going to offer him fairness. He was made even more bluer by them in redistricting. Yet, here’s Meijer still thinking that if he just says orange man bad loud enough, Democrats will disengage and pat him on the head.
Democrats like Maloney said that Republicans in the Trump era looked the other way and put party before country. However, they understand what they mean: As part of a series of naked political gambits to elevate the weaker Republican candidate before the November midterm elections they launched a $435,000 ad-buy to promote Gibbs’ election denial in the days that elapsed to our primary.
Meijer correctly states that Democrats supported Donald Trump over country. Meijer would be incredibly stupid if he believed that they were honest. I’ve already used the word pathetic once in this article, but come on. What else can I describe the screed of this man?
This should be a lesson for Republicans. If they want to stand on “principle,” whatever that may be, go ahead. It’s a free country, after all. Any GOP politician that believes they can trust Democrats to be fair should be removed. That kind of vapidness isn’t useful in Washington, and Meijer acting shocked that his new friends would stab him in the back is in no way a point in his favor.
