A dating app designed to help conservatives in liberal cultures find their love is being supported by one of Big Tech’s only right-wing players.
Conservatives seeking love could have a new wingman. “Peter Thiel is injecting $1.5 million into a seed round for a new conservative dating app called ‘The Right Stuff,’ a source familiar with the funding tells Axios,” Axios reported Feb. 15. “Conservatives have been aggressively building their own apps, phones, cryptocurrencies and publishing houses in an attempt to circumvent what they see as an increasingly liberal internet and media ecosystem.”
Axios summarized further that while the app “isn’t political itself,” it will nonetheless be “catered to conservatives living primarily in big, progressive cities.”
Axios observed also that another key backer was a prominent right-wing figure in tech. “The person behind the app is former Trump political aide John McEntee,” Axios wrote. McEnty reportedly explained that the app is coming soon: “‘We’re excited to launch The Right Stuff dating app this summer. Conservatives need an easy way for them to get in touch. Thiel, who was previously a board member at Meta Facebook, has now invested in Rumble. Rumble is a popular YouTube alternative used widely by conservatives.
Because of the apparent bias in liberal dating apps, such as OKCupid and Tinder, moderates and conservatives may be able to find an alternative.
OKCupid released a range of disturbing Valentine’s Day cards featuring plants barely covering cartoon genitals, nipple stickers, gay hugs and naked makeout sessions created by “a diverse group of inspiring artists.” The app also created a “pro-choice” badge for users to add to their profile in response to the new Texas abortion law. For every use of the “pro-choice” badge, OKCupid donated $1 to baby-killing Planned Parenthood. And previously, OKCupid filtered its users by support of Planned Parenthood to show that “shared cause is sexy.”
Similarly, Tinder has a series of “passions” or common interest tabs users can select to match with other users. While some are non-political like “comedy” or “skiing,” others are explicitly partisan. Those looking for political “passion” options will find a range of liberal talking points, including: “LGBTQ+ Rights,” “Climate Change,” “Voter Rights,” “Black Lives Matter” and “Feminism.” By contrast, there are no “passions” such as “pro-life,” “gun rights” or even “free speech” to help more conservative users find one another.
