Cameras happened to capture the moment a disappointed Iowa Democrat voter learned 2020 presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is gay.
An Iowa Democratic caucus voter known only as “Geert” withdrew her support for Buttigieg, but only after having already voted for the Fort Bend, Indiana mayor on Monday night, NBC News reported.
Video of the incident went viral after being shared widely Tuesday on Twitter.
“Are you saying he has a same-sex partner?” the woman asked in the video, which has racked up nearly 3 million views.
After being told that Buttigieg is married to a man, the caucusgoer replied: “Then I don’t want anybody like that in the White House.”
“So, can I have my card back?” she added.
Buttigieg campaign precinct captain Nikki van den Heever told the woman that Buttigieg’s sexuality “shouldn’t really matter.”
“The whole point of it is, though, he’s a human being, right?” van den Heever said.
Geert pushed back, referencing her Christian faith and the Bible.
“Why does it say in the Bible that a man should marry a woman then?” she said.
Van den Heever responded by saying she respected Geert’s faith, but that “I think we were not around when the Bible was written.”
Geert was apparently blindsided by the realization about Buttigieg’s sexual orientation.
“How come this has never been brought out before?” she said. “I never heard it.”
While LGBT rights is a major plank in Buttigieg’s platform and a plethora of think pieces and profiles have been written about his sexuality, many liberals have complained that the former naval intelligence officer is in fact “not gay enough.”
