PBS broadcast a Christiane Amppour interview on CNN from Monday with Enes Kanter, Boston Celtics star basketball, about the controversy that Enes has caused over his anti-China activism. His attack on Nike is worth the effort.
Amanpour was shocked when Nike denied that China exploits slave labor. These studies prove otherwise.
AMANPOUR, Why keep criticizing them when they are — if that is what their public — their reaction to that?
KANTER Nike is clearly the largest — and most important sponsor of NBA. Two years ago, Nike, the largest sponsor of NBA, was there to support Black Lives Matter. Nike supports the end of hatred towards Asians. Nike supports the LGBTQ community. Nike is committed to Latino communities.
Nike is silent when it comes China because China — China is Nike’s big boss. They know exactly what they’re doing wrong, so they won’t be able answer. They are the largest hypocrite company in the world.
AMANPOUR: You’re not accusing. In this instance, you aren’t accusing them of profiting by slave labor. They deny that.
KANTER: They — that’s a complete lie. All people know that Nike profits from the existence of so many slave labor camps. This was why I chose to wear my Nike sneakers modern-day slavery, and Nike hypocrisy because they profit from slave labor camps.
Kanter then went after Nike athletes like Colin Kaepernick: “And it’s just disgusting to me see all the Nike athletes standing up for — and they are calling themselves a social justice warrior, and still can wear these items on their shoe, on their feet, or on their back, where, on these items, there is so much blood and sweat and oppression. And, to me, if you’re a Nike athlete, to me, you’re a hypocrite.”
