It’s official: Novak Djokovic will not be playing in the U.S. Open, the final tournament in tennis’ Grand Slam circuit.
Because the U.S. bans foreigners not being vaccinated, Djokovic has decided to withdraw as the Serbian champion and Wimbledon defending champion. Djokovic’s latest comment that he will sacrifice his chance to win titles to keep himself unvaccinated is a clear sign of what he meant. He was also barred from entering the Australian Open this year because of the same issue.
Djokovic announced the news earlier in Thursday via Twitter.
Unfortunately, this year’s US Open will be in New York City. We are grateful. #NoleFamI appreciate your kind words of support and encouragement. ❤️All my fellow players, good luck! I’ll keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again. 💪🏼Tennis world, see you soon! 👋🏼

Djokovic remains a shining example in conviction despite an enormous financial cost. Even though he has already accomplished so much, it still costs him chance at a title to cement his legacy as the greatest men’s tennis player ever. For an ultra-competitor like him, that’s a high cost.
The Open’s losing player will be replaced.
Djokovic could join the Serbian Davis Cup team or the European Laver Cup team. Flushing Meadows in New York will host the U.S. Open on Monday.
