Chris Plante, a conservative radio host and syndicated talk-radio host mocked Friday’s daily editorial cartoon. The Washington PostThis was no joke. Michael De Adder (staff artist) thought that it would be appropriate and amusing to suggest Florida governor. Ron DeSantis was a serial killer. His so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill would have the death penalty for transgender children who decide to be gay.
This had echos of Herb Block (“Herblock”) the famous leftist Post cartoonist. DeSantis was carrying a bag of apples labeled “DON’T SAY GAY,” which were poisoned, since behind him were three dead children (one with mouse ears) that were labeled “TRANS KIDS.” DeSantis said to an angry Snow White and horrified Mickey Mouse, “I’m protecting Florida’s children from your opposition.”
It’s not always true that Republicans and conservatives are promoting the overblown lie that they’re killing people because they oppose every transgender-related invention. For example, letting women compete in sports for men. Post. On Thursday — the previous day — the Editorial Board lamented students at the University of Virginia wanted to cancel a speech by former Vice President Mike Pence because that would “threaten lives”!
Last year, U-Va.’s Board of Visitors affirmed its commitment to free expression in endorsing a statement specifying that education itself “requires freedom to speak, write, inquire, listen, challenge, and learn, including through exposure to a range of ideas.”
Sadly, that “range of ideas” is apparently too broad for some at U-Va., including at the campus newspaper, the Cavalier Daily, which said in an editorial that Mr. Pence “is not entitled to a platform,” citing his record on issues concerning LGBTQ individuals, minorities and immigrants. His appearance, the paper said, “Threatens to lives” of students and others on campus.
In fact, Mr. Pence has spoken at scores of universities, to the detriment of no one’s safety.
All of us agree with the fact that former Indiana governor and Congressman Mike Pence has been deeply incorrect on many matters, even those cited by student papers. His politics has been marked by intolerance. But to deny him a forum on that basis — not least at a taxpayer-funded university — is to sanctify intolerance of a different stripe, equally toxic, and dress it up as existential concern. He should be heard.
Friday’s headline was “Magic Mirror, Who Is the Trumpiest of All?”
De Adder is located in Halifax Nova Scotia (Canada) Twitter account It boasts, “Follow Me Here for the Trolls.” You might find sandwiches. This cartoon isn’t he trolling?
