Still broadcasting from the Bahamas on Wednesday, the cast of ABC’s The View celebrated President Joe Biden signing the bipartisan “gun reform” legislation into law. But while the rest of the coven was in good spirits, co-host Sunny Hostin was “the curmudgeon on the panel” and lamented that no other gun control schemes were likely to pass. She then lashed out suggesting that one can’t be pro-life and pro-gun.
“[W]It was not my intention to hide the positive developments that occurred in D.C. last weekend. President Biden signed the bipartisan gun reform bill into law,”Whoopi Goldberg joyfully announced. “And it’s not everything everybody wanted, but it is a start. Does it give you any hope?”
Ana Navarro shouted in exhilaration, as did Sara Haines. “Yes!” the former exclaimed. “And I don’t say that easily. I don’t say that often, and I don’t say that readily.”
Adding: “This is exactly how things need to happen in Washington. Where Republicans and Democrats need to put partisan differences together and put their constituents’ interests and the interests of the country in front of anything else.”
The View didn’t have this kind of enjoyment when Democratic Senators Joe Manchin (WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ) help create bi-partisan opposition to President Biden’s agenda or Democratic attempts to kill the filibuster.
Haines enjoyed watching the NRA get nowhere with their policy goals.
Yeah. John Cornyn was saying – and he goes – You said, he said the quiet part out loud. We sit down and listen to him speak out against any passage. The laws that were passed in Florida following Parkland did not pass in a Republican state. It was passed, but the NRA hated it. This was not what they wanted.
“So, it shows you move the ball 20 yards, and then you move it 20 yards. Just keep moving it. This was a huge first step,” she touted.
However, Tropical Storm Sunny dumped rain on the parade.
“Look. I just, you know, I don’t think that we’re going to see much more movement on this, especially with the way the Supreme Court is going,” she bemoaned. “Because now you have Clarence Thomas writing an opinion that says, you know, you can have your guns anywhere. You can have them not only in your home, you can have them outside.”
She accused Republicans, and the Supreme Court. “hypocrisy” because she couldn’t wrap her head around supporting the right to life and the right to bear arms. “Pro-life is not possible if one is pro-death penalty, but also pro-guns. There’s just no way that that is consistent,”She groaned.
And in her own contrived reasoning, Hostin seemed to suggest that being pro-gun equated to being pro-murder, thus she couldn’t understand how most conservatives could be pro-death penalty for murder:
HOSTIN. And when I think of the Republican Party, I mean that 80 percent Republicans think that the death penalty should be appropriate and morally justifiable for murder convictions. We know that many murderers are wrongly convicted.
GOLDBERG: Right.
HOSTIN: The Republican Party is also pro-gun rights.
It’s not hypocrisy when you understand that the right to bear arms encompasses the right to lawful self-defense to protect the right of life for one’s self, family, and others.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG : However, we did not want to ignore a positive outcome in D.C. over the weekend. Biden signed the bipartisan gun legislation into law.
[Applause]
It’s not all that everyone wanted but it is a beginning. Is it a sign of hope?
ANA NAVARRO; Yes
SARA HAINES – Yes.
NAVARRO : I can’t do that often. That’s something I won’t often say, and that’s what I’m not able to say easily.
Listen. That is how Washington needs to be run. Republicans and Democrats should work together, putting their constituents and country’s interests above all else.
They became friends. They reached a compromise. This deal is not the best for all Republicans. It doesn’t satisfy all the Democrats. It doesn’t really matter. If everything that’s in the bill – Do I think it’s enough? But I do not. Do I consider everything contained in the book a positive thing? Yes. This is why I’m so glad that the NRA has finally lifted its grip on legislation for the first time since over thirty years.
[Applause]
HAINES: We saw this quote yesterday. Who was it that said the NRA – we played it on the show – the NRA won’t budge on anything.
NAVARRO: John Cornyn.
HAINES: Yeah. John Cornyn was saying – and he goes – You said, he said the quiet part out loud. We sit down and listen to him tell us that the NRA does not approve of any passage. The laws that were passed in Florida following Parkland did not pass in a Republican state. It was passed, but the NRA hated it. This was not what they wanted.
It shows that you have moved the ball 20 meters, then it moves it another 20 miles. The ball will continue to move. It was an important first step.
SUNNY HOTIN: It is a terrible thing to be the judge on this panel.
GOLDBERG: Are you truly? What’s up with you?
HOSTIN: Look. You know what? I think we won’t see any more progress on this issue, particularly with the Supreme Court’s current direction. Clarence Thomas has written an opinion that states, “You can have your guns wherever you like.” These guns can be kept in or outside your home.
This is a hypocrisy that we are seeing from the Supreme Court and from Republicans. If you are truly pro-life you can’t be both pro-death penalty AND pro-guns. This is not possible.
If you consider the Republican Party, you will see that 80 percent believe that the death penalty, when applied to someone who has been convicted of murder, is justifiable and morally right. We know that many murderers are wrongly convicted.
GOLDBERG: Right.
HOSTIN: The Republican Party is also pro-gun rights.
GOLDBERG: Right.
HOSTIN: Pro-guns. We aren’t moving, I don’t believe so.
