NFL Suspends Calvin Ridley For Betting On Games

Unfortunately, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley has something in common with Pete Rose (ex-Cincinnati Reds first baseman). Their gambling habits have led to some very serious consequences.

Ridley is now suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games. According to a statement from the NFL, Ridley’s gambling activity “took place during a five-day period in late November 2021 while Ridley was not with the team and was away from the club’s facility on the non-football illness list.”

He bet approximately $1,500 in three separate parlays. One of his wagers was on the Falcons winning the game. This occurred between November 23 and 28. The NFL was notified of his betting activities and he was immediately suspended.

The NFL’s investigation revealed that no games were compromised. Ridley can appeal for reinstatement on February 15, 2023, but thanks to the NFL’s CBA, he can appeal the suspension within three days, though a series of tweets from Ridley himself suggests he will not. The suspension was not taken seriously by Ridley, who seemed to have somewhat shunned responsibility for his actions.

Although the Falcons are losing a key player, they will be able to increase their payroll significantly after he is suspended. Atlanta has now $11.1 million in cap space that they can use to upgrade their key areas. The Falcons were 7-10 last year.
