All three networks on Thursday morning shifted into full freak out mode as journalists worried about the “gutting” of abortion by conservatives on the Supreme Court. He didn’t even try to conceal his position. Good Morning America’s Terry Moran saw “ominous” clues coming from justices like Brett Kavanaugh.
Although a Mississippi abortion ban ruling is still six months off, it has already begun. GMA co-host Amy Robach opened the show this way: “Roe V. Wade is over? Supreme Court appears ready to change the abortion rights ruling. What it could mean for millions.”
On NBC’s Today, co-host Hoda Kotb lamented, “Are you experiencing a seismic shift? The Supreme Court signals it could walk back abortion rights that have stood for nearly 50 years after hearing the biggest challenge on the issue in decades…. Roe v. Wade hangs in the balance.” Keeping the focus on the abortion side and not pro-lifers, CBS Mornings co-host Nate Burleson lamented, “Access to abortion may be in jeopardy after a day of arguments at the Supreme Court.”
But, by far, ABC’s Moran offered the most disturbed response to the bad day for abortion supporters. He called out Kavanaugh’s openness to overturning Roe as an “ominous” sign:
Kavanaugh had changed course after his confirmation hearing in 2018. He said that the law was already settled. Kavanaugh now noted that the Court often ignores major precedents.
Who is it that’s so ominous? Liberals like Terry Moran are not welcome. The journalist continued his hyperbolic tone: “The Supreme Court appears primed to upend Roe vs. Wade, a move that would transform and maybe even eliminate a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion in the United States.”
Moran continued to use pro-choice-friendly language, talking about “gutting” Roe: “There are a dozen states at least with laws ready to go if the Supreme Court either Overturns and gutsRoe vs. Wade. You would have a patchwork of access to abortion across the United States.”
The networks suffered a quick meltdown on Wednesday as they lamented that Roe’s “strong, new conservative majority” would doom them.

MICHAEL STRAHAN: Now we’re going to turn to the battle over abortion rights. Now, after hearing arguments on the Mississippi law intended to repeal Roe Vs. Wade’s landmark ruling, the Supreme Court is deciding the fate. Terry Moran reports.
TERRY MORAN [Crowd chanting.]The clash between activists for and against abortion rights was fierce. Many protestors gathered on the court’s steps. In the meantime, six conservative justices indicated they were inclined to accept a Mississippi law which would prohibit most abortions within 15 weeks. There are no exemptions for rape and incest. Roe and similar cases currently prohibit states from banning abortion after fetal viability has passed, which is approximately 24 weeks. However, the Mississippi law would stop abortions from being performed two months prior. Chief Justice John Roberts said that the Mississippi law gives women enough time to make their own decisions.
JOHN ROBERTS. My ability doesn’t seem to be related to choice. However, if this is really a question of choice, isn’t 15 weeks enough?
MORAN: Justice Brett Kavanaugh inquired whether it was appropriate to leave abortion up to the states, which would mean overturning Roe completely.
BRETT KAVANAUGH : Should this court decide rather than Congress, the states legislatures and state supreme judges, or the people being able resolve it?
MORAN: Kavanaugh is changing his course since the 2018 confirmation hearing, when he stated it was settled legal. However, Kavanaugh has noted that the Court frequently overrules major precedents. They rebutted, concerned that Roe could be reversed or shattered by liberal justices and threaten the Court’s legitimacy.
SONIA SOTOMAYOR – Will the institution survive the stigma that is created by the perception in public opinion that the Constitution’s reading and interpretation are political acts? This is not possible, according to me.
MORAN: The Court will rule in the case at the end its term. This is most likely next June. Michael.
STRAHAN – Terry, what does it all mean, Terry?
MORAN: That would be huge Michael. No question about it. At least 12 states have laws that are ready for action if Roe vs. Wade is overturned or gutted by the Supreme Court. There would be a network of abortion access in the United States. America could be very different in June for both women and reproductive rights.
STRAHAN George.
