The network morning shows sounded the alarm on Saturday, warning of the “shockwaves” and “outrage” at the “newly activist conservative” Supreme Court majority that overturned Roe vs. Wade. On Friday, Terry Moran suddenly discovered the concept of judicial activism, attacking the conservatives as “judges in politicians’ robes.” On Saturday’s Good Morning America he spoke of “Activist conservatives are now more confident.”
Moran continued his worried tone: “This morning, shockwaves across the country. In a sweeping ruling that overturned a half a century of precedents, five justices ended the right of American women to choose abortion under the Constitution.”
There are more CBS Saturday Morning co-host Dana Jacobson also saw “shockwaves” and worried about the “Court’s five most conservative justices.”
Omar Villafranca, CBS reporter, featured only one clip from a talk head politician tour the ruling. Three clips were taken by the pro-choice side.

EVA PILGRIM: We start our coverage with ABC’s Terry Moran at the Supreme Court. Terry, it’s good to see you.
TERRY MORRAN: Hello Eva. This is a new day in America, for those women who were denied a fundamental constitutional right 50 years ago. Millions of Americans fought over decades for this right to be ended. Many of them now feel their prayers are being answered. The shockwaves that erupted this morning swept the nation. Five justices ruled that American women can now choose to have an abortion, ending a century-old tradition.
Now, the matter is up to all 50 US states. The Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade on Friday. With five conservative justices voting in favor of Roe, the much-anticipated decision upheld Mississippi’s ban of abortion after fifteen weeks. Justice Samuel Alito writing in the majority opinion that “the Constitution makes no reference to abortion and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.” The monumental decision now leaves the issue up to the 50 states. Eight weeks have passed since Justice Alito leaked a draft of his opinion. This was the day of vindication and victory for abortion opponents.
CAROL TOBIAS (President of the National Right to Life Committee),: Our work to protect unborn children has continued for 50 years. The pro-life movement has a number of programs, centers and pregnancy centers which will assist women.
MORAN: In dissent, Justice Stephen Breyer, joined by Justices Elana Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, sounded a somber warning: “With sorrow for the court but more for the many millions of American women who have lost a fundamental ago constitutional protection, we dissent.” President Biden addressing the nation, saying it is a sad day for the court and country.
JOE BIDEN – The Court did something it had never done before: It took away a fundamental constitutional right for so many Americans, even though it was already recognized.
MORAN: Former President Trump taking credit for recent conservative Supreme Court decisions: “Because I delivered everything as promised including nominating and getting three highly respected and strong constitutionalists confirmed to the United States Supreme Court.” And now with this ruling 13 states could enact their so-called trigger laws outlawing abortion after Roe is gone. Seventeen states have so far implemented their bans. Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker of House and called the Court’s judgment cruel, heartbreaking and cruel.
NANCY PELOSI, HOST SPEEDER: While this is a serious matter, we will not let it pass. The November ballot will include reproductive freedom and a woman’s right to choice.
MORAN However, the court’s reasoning in overturning Roe vs. Wade can be used to pursue other rights. Justice Clarence Thomas stated that it could. His own opinion was written by him in which he urged the court to reconsider cases that would have allowed gay men to buy contraceptives. There is also a right for private sexual conduct. Whit.

DANA JACOBSON – This morning we begin with the shocking decision that shocked America. Roe Vs. Wade, the Supreme Court’s decision that ended constitutional protections for abortions, was overturned. Five of the Court’s most conservative justices overturned Roe Vs. Wade in a historic decision. The decision in this new case, Dobbs vs. Women’s Health Organization, sends the issue of abortion rights back to the states and is likely to result in abortion bans in about half.
The Supreme Court’s ruling is an important victory for abortion advocates, but it was also met with anger by pro-choice activists. Protests spread to the Supreme Court’s steps and cities all over the country. Protests will be held in over 100 cities this weekend. Last night police used teargas against protestors at the Phoenix Protest. The police say that protesters banged on windows of State Capitol, while the senate was there. No injuries were sustained or arrests made. Our team has a number of reporters covering seismic decisions. We begin with Christina Ruffini, who is not at the Supreme Court. Christina, good morning.

OMAR VILLAFRANCA – Protests took place in Dallas as well in other states in the South where these trigger laws were in effect. For an example of how the effect was felt, for a Dallas woman to have an abortion she’d need to drive 350 miles to Wichita (Kansas) to reach the closest clinic. Arkansas made changes yesterday to its abortion laws.
GOVERNOR ASASA HUTCHINSON : This is for me a pivotal moment in the history of our country. Roe Vs. Wade has made it impossible for states to defend unborn children.
VILLARANCA – Any Oklahoma doctor performing an abortion could be sentenced to prison. Oklahoma is one eight state where abortion bans are triggered by the court’s decision.
MAN: This was God’s will.
VILLAFRANCA – Yesterday, Louisiana’s last abortion center closed.
WOMAN. What you have prayed is that death be made easier for women by refusing them good medical treatment.
VILLAFRANCA – Abortion activists across the country claim that women of color will suffer most.
ASHLEY SHELTON: (Executive director of Power Coalition for Equity and Justice). You are basically sentenced to death black women because we already die in child birth.
VILLAFRANCA: Missouri congresswoman Cori Bush.
REP. CORIBUSH – I was only 18 when I experienced rape and was unable to find the service provider. I got the help I needed.
VILLAFRANCA – Activists, governors increase their efforts to unify a country already fractured.
GOV. GOV.
VILLAFRANCA – Washington has forty abortion clinics. Three clinics are located in Idaho, and they could be closed. Washington predicts that there will be a 400 percent rise in the number and types of patients who choose abortion. Idaho already has nearly 60% of all abortion patients.
GOVERNOR GAVIN NewsSOM: This is the kind of action I am referring to —
VILLARANCA: Yesterday, California’s governor signed legislation to help out-of-state females who seek abortion. The landmark Roe-vs. Wade case was initiated in Dallas. Henry Wade was the Dallas county district attorney. The current Dallas D.A. Many others from Texas also stated that they understood the law and would not consider prosecuting abortions their top priority. Dana?
