This Thursday Rachel Maddow ShowAyman MOHYEDIN, MSNBC fill-in host was devoted to pushing President Joe Biden for a ban on the fossil fuels industry. Setting up a segment with environmental alarmist Bill McKibben, Mohyeldin blamed recent examples of extreme weather on “climate change” and lamented that Democrats have failed to pass regulations to allegedly address the issue:
If you look at all these things together, it becomes clear that climate change is responsible. How can we stop climate change? Is it possible to stop climate change as quickly and effectively as we can? With President Biden’s Build Back Better, Democrats got this year closer than ever to real substantive climate change. However, Democratic Senators Joe Manchin (Democratic) and Krysten SIMENA — together with the filibuster — effectively put this legislation on life support.
Then he suggested that President Biden could take additional action against businesses without the approval of Congress.
Bill McKibben – one of America’s most prominent climate activists and experts – is offering a different path. It’s an important and alternative route. To jumpstart climate policy, he proposes President Biden should use his executive power as President. This idea may not be so insane after all. While Congress is still in lockdown, the President’s Interior Department has announced that it will lease almost all of federally managed coastline to offshore wind farms.
McKibben, who was invited as a guest to the meeting, took aim at Joe Manchin, moderate Democratic senator, for being funded by the fossil fuel sector. He then listed the actions that President Biden could undertake to stop the use fossil fuels.
He could shut down Line 3 pipelines — and he could also stop leasing new oil or gas on public lands. He should be able to move, and he must do so in order for Treasury, the SEC and Fed to crack down on banks funding fossil fuel industries.

AYMAN MOHYELDIN: It is impossible — impossible — to tie any one of these extreme weather events directly to climate change, but we have had an absolutely overwhelmingly — overwhelming amount of weather disasters this year. If you look at them all, it becomes clear that climate change is responsible. How can we stop climate change? Is it possible to stop climate change as quickly and effectively as we can? This year, Democrats came closer than ever to passing significant climate change legislation with President Biden’s Build Back Better.
Krysten Simena and Joe Manchin, both Democratic Senators from Democratic States of America, have effectively put the legislation on life support. Bill McKibben – one of America’s most prominent climate activists and experts – is offering an important alternative and important path. To jumpstart climate policy, he proposes President Biden should use his executive power as President.
This idea may not seem so insane. While Congress was locked up, President Biden’s Interior Department revealed plans to lease nearly all federally managed coastline for offshore wind farm development like this. Biden could do so much more. Bill McKibben will be joining us. He’s a climate expert, and one of three founders of 350.org. … With Joe Manchin’s need for happiness out of the picture, it is possible that the chains could be thrown off the climate change fight. The White House could do a lot with his executive powers regarding climate change.
BILL MCKIBBEN (350.ORG): Okay, now let’s talk about three. The best possible scenario is for Joe Manchin to join us and approve the Build Back Better legislation. Look at it, Congress has not passed any climate legislation in 30 years. This is the time when we must do something. Joe Manchin, who is the only person to have taken more from fossil fuels than any other individual, refuses a compromise. The President still has some options.
He could shut down Line 3 pipelines — and he could also stop leasing new oil or gas on public lands. He is free to move and should do so. Treasury, the SEC, and Fed can also make it clear that they are taking action against the banks financing the fossil fuel sector.
