MSNBC’s Johnson Melts Down: GOP Commits Violence Against Black People Regularly

On MSNBC’s Deadline: White HouseOn Tuesday afternoon host Nicole Wallace was the same as she is every single day since January 6, 2021. She obsesses over Capitol Hill riots. This coverage saw her bring Jason Johnson (Morgan State University Journalism Professor and MSNBC Contributor) to cover the latest scenes from the January 6 Pelosi-picked committee.

After airing a soundbite from a Georgia poll worker named Ruby Freeman who was allegedly made a target after being caught on tape “passing a suspicious USB drive while counting election results in Fulton County, Ga”, Johnson was furious.

“The level of rage that I and people that I know had when we saw this testimony is beyond anything I’ve probably experienced since George Floyd” Johnson wailed. “That’s my grandmother. That is literally the kind of work that my grandmother used to do in Newark, New Jersey, registering people to vote, taking seniors in buses to go here & there, getting young people registered to vote” he added.

He then claimed without evidence that the Republican Party engages in violence against black people “on a regular basis”:

This trial should be compared to the level of violence committed by the Republican group against blacks on a daily basis. They do this. They do this.

Johnson never gave examples of this supposed violence and never explained that if it did occur “on a regular basis” why doesn’t MSNBC cover it.

“This is why Randy Bowman and Raffensperger– this is why I don’t care about getting threatening calls. Because you don’t know what will happen to them. They go back to their offices and they get security” Johnson ranted. “You know what happens to people on the Supreme Court when they get threatened? They get security paid for by the Senate.”

Ending his unhinged rant, Johnson demanded his political opponents be put in jail despite no evidence to justify it: “every single one of these people should be in jail. And if they’re not, it’s an absolute abdication of responsibility by this committee, by Merrick Garland all the way up to the White House.”

JASON JOHNSON – The level of rage I felt and others experienced when I saw the testimony was beyond any I have ever seen since George Floyd. This is my grandmother. That is literally the kind of work that my grandmother used to do in Newark, New Jersey, registering people to vote, taking seniors in buses to go here & there, getting young people registered to vote.

This trial should be compared to the level of violence committed by the Republican group against blacks on a daily basis. They do this. They do this. Randy Bowman and Raffensperger are doing this. This is also why I don’t like getting threatening calls. Because you don’t know what will happen to them. They get security and go back to work. Do you know what happens when people are threatened by the Supreme Court?

Security is paid by the Senate for them. The Senate does not pay for security to regular black workers who do their jobs well, or people with lost names. They can go to the grocery shop, they are able to continue living their normal lives because of the fact that they have stood against the white nationist coup disguised as the Republican Party. Nicole’s testimony has caused me to be so angry because I know they will face additional threats.

It is also clear that this party is not going to protect those who are being harmed when they face it again in the fall. It was one of the most frustrating parts of these hearings I have ever witnessed. All of these individuals should be imprisoned. They should all be in prison.
