MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Feels Biden’s Political Pain at the ‘Cascade of Crises’

MSNBC has a lot of empathy for President Biden’s troubles in the polls. Mitchell spoke out on Tuesday morning during Andrea Mitchell Reports. Mitchell described the problems President Joe Biden has to face with November’s midterm elections.

Mitchell sadly recounted that “the President’s low approval ratings have really frightened him and Democrats around the country, especially on Capitol Hill. Mitchell stated Biden is now feeling “adrift” but “looking to sharpen his message ahead of midterms.” A big story by four reporters at NBCNews.com relays that Biden is now wanting to reclaim the confidence of voters and show that he can “provide the sure-handed leadership he promised during the campaign.” The Democratic leaders are unsure how he will regain his voters by November, claiming that the midterm elections may also cost his party majority rule in Congress.

Mitchell when welcomed NBC News Chief White House Correspondent Kristen Welker to talk more on the “cascade of crises right now” that the President has been the leader during naming the few recent of inflation, the war in Ukraine, soaring gas prices, a rise in COVID-19 cases and the baby formula shortage that has been very evident.

Noting that the President seems to be “particularly frustrated when it comes to the issue of the economy and inflation,” Welker continues to say that the true problem is none of the above but, rather “he feels like his message has not broken through enough, Andrea. He feels there’s a compelling story. It is not all bad, like the low unemployment rates. He wants to, he wants Democrats to highlight that and to do a better job, frankly, of highlighting that.”

In light of the recent series of events, it is interesting that “sharpening his message” is what the White House reporters would consider to be important, and not the notion that all these crises were caused by his policies. This report bubble did not mention how Republicans claim that Biden caused inflation, created a border crisis and sparked war in Ukraine.

It is fascinating to observe that when reporting on White House events, one would notice that the audience sees and perceives the other party as putting less emphasis on their message and more on the need for change. The media would see words such as incompetent or uncaring heavily in reporting on the White House, much like they did in the aftermath of the Uvalde shooting.

Mitchell and Welker cannot speak for Biden, as Democrats hold the power.

MSNBC Andrea Mitchell Reports

ANDREA MITCHELL Jay Powell is the Fed chairman, and he will be meeting with him later today. The President’s approval rating is low and gas prices have soared to $6.00 in certain states. This has frightened Democrats across the country, especially Capitol Hill.

The President is left feeling lost, as he tries to make his message clearer ahead of midterms. This, we believe, has led to him looking for ways to communicate better, our reports from NBC and interviews with White House officials. Kristen Welker, chief White House correspondent at NBC News, is joining us. Kristen, can you talk with me about what’s causing the White House to be so scared right now? It’s closer to midterms, and we have less time to fix it.

KRISTEN WALKER: Andrea, that’s absolutely correct. KRISTEN WELKER: Andrea, you’re absolutely right. The White House, as President, is really facing a series of crises at the moment, such as inflation and war in Ukraine. One White House official framed it this way saying, “I’ve heard him say recently that he used to say about president Obama’s tenure that everything landed on his desk but the locusts, and now he understands how that feels.”

That really conveys that he’s dealing with an unusual number of crises at once. He is particularly upset about inflation and the economy. Andrea says he feels his message isn’t being received well enough. There is still a great story. It is not all bad, like the low unemployment rates. He would like to see Democrats highlight those strengths and do better at highlighting them. He’s also trying to show Americans that his pain is felt. Today’s Wall Street Journal op-ed stated that inflation will be his number one priority. Today he will meet with the Fed chair and, according to me, he will stress independence of the Fed, while also stating that he has plans to reduce inflation. Officials from the Administration have stated that they expect inflation to begin to fall by this fall. Andrea, inflation is not something that can be predicted. Democrats and this president are increasingly alarmed about this, as well as the possible impact on the midterm election.
