MRC’s Brent Baker found that MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Monday showcased a new issue of Atlantic magazine carrying the panicked headline “January 6th Was Practice.” Practice for what? Trump-haters to take a “catastrophic turning toward authoritarianism and nativism”
Jeffrey Goldberg’s leadership, the magazine was aggressively partisan just like MSNBC. They gushed all over Barack Obama’s foreign policy, endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016 in its first-ever endorsement, and then smeared Trump in 2020 with the claim that he said dead soldiers were losers and suckers.
MIKA BRZEZINSKI : We are approaching the year anniversary of the attack against the U.S. Capitol. If you believe that, it will be just one month. It’s only one month until that day. AtlanticThe January and February issues of the magazine are dedicated to American democracy in crises. It is quite shocking to see the headline for the cover story. Quote, “January 6th was practice.’
Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of the magazine joins us. Jeffrey wrote this note for the editor’s notes of the new issue. You can quote, “There’s not enough space in that issue to trace.” The Republican party’s collapse from Lincoln’s time to ours. This is sufficient to state that the Republican party’s recent, and most dangerous turn towards authoritarianism and nativism threatens the Republic it was established to save. It is clear that the one of America’s major parties, the punitively dedicated to conservatism’s ideas and ideals, is now the dominant party. fallen into disrepute of autocratic leadershipThis is unnerving, especially for a magazine dedicated to being. In the words of our founding manifesto, ‘of no party or clique.’”
Joe Scarborough asked Goldberg for his rationale:
GOLDBERG : I think we need to focus, really concentrate now on these. Trump and his minions have a lot of ways to ensure that 2024 is their year. So we put together this issue to show our readers everything that can go wrong and what the Republican Party, or much of it, is doing right now to help make the situation favorable.
As usual, Mika Brzezinski repeated the whole Madeleine Albright warning about fascism on the march.
MIKA BRZEZINSKI We are far too close to the edge. And we don’t have the resources or ability to change this ship. It’s not possible to look at Republicans’ behavior in Congress right now and say, “Oh, these are the crazy people on the right.” This behavior is being accepted.
GOLDBERG: Right. Madeleine Albright, who is a product of Europe or Asia or African authoritarianism experiences, are warning us. Don’t believe you are special. We are all human beings. Societies make up societies. All people are susceptible to the same temptations and weaknesses across the globe. It doesn’t matter if you were able to resist authoritarianism during the past. You might not be able to do the same in the future if you are facing a determined group that wants to control democracy in order to rule the world forever. They’re right. This is why I don’t take this lightly.
