Brick forms the entrance sign for Robb Elementary school in Uvalde (Texas). Underneath the school’s name, in script, it reads: “Bienvenidos.” Welcome. It is a warm and welcoming greeting.
This is in sharp contrast to Tuesday’s horror at the school. I know there aren’t any words I can offer about that unspeakable evil that will erase what happened or the pain of the families and the community in its aftermath. I don’t know that anyone has the right words. We certainly don’t have all the answers.
But that doesn’t absolve us from trying to find them. It’s the unfortunate human condition that we alone can’t overcome sin and vanquish evil. Our Creator gave us this world along with intelligence and humankind to enjoy. And we’re charged with being good stewards of it – and of one another.
I believe we’re capable of working toward rational, workable solutions – the question isn’t capability; it’s willingness. Do we have the will to take a hard look not just at others but at ourselves; to set aside our partisan impulses and our pride to do what’s needed to face down this type of evil and make this world one in which we can once again greet one another – sincerely – with “Bienvenidos.”
