GOP Rep. Compares Adam Schiff to Jussie Smollett and Lori Loughlin

“It would be like putting Lori Loughlin in charge of the college board.”

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., said Wednesday during an appearance on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” that keeping Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., on the House Intelligence Committee would “be like putting Lori Loughlin in charge of the college board” or “putting Jussie Smollett in charge” of investigating hate crimes for the FBI.

Gaetz’s remarks followed his filing of the Preventing Extreme Negligence with Classified Information Licenses (PENCIL) Act, a resolution that seeks to remove the House Intelligence chairman from the Committee and revoke his security clearance, earlier in the day.

“I have filed legislation today, sent to the House, that Adam Schiff needs to be removed from the Intelligence Committee, because how are the rest of us supposed to be able to rely on a man, who you just showed, lied to the American people when he said that there was not spying?” the Florida lawmaker told host Tucker Carlson. “Or when he lied and said that there was actual evidence of collusion or clear evidence of collusion?”

“If Adam Schiff is able to review covert operations and intelligence, and if we have to rely on his representation, our whole system is broken,” Gaetz added. “It would be like putting Lori Loughlin in charge of the college board. It would be like putting Jussie Smollett in charge of the hate crime of the FBI.”

Smollett and Loughlin, both Hollywood actors, are currently embroiled in high-profile scandals. Loughlin and her husband are accused of paying $500,000 to have their two daughters admitted to USC as members of the crew team, even though neither of them participated in crew. Smollett is alleged to have orchestrated a hoax hate-crime attack against himself.

The PENCIL Act echoes President Donald Trump’s nickname for Schiff, who he called a “little pencil neck” at a March rally. In late March, the Trump campaign began selling “Pencil-Neck Adam Schiff” T-shirts on its campaign website.

Schiff has been under siege from Republicans after the Mueller report cleared Trump and his associates of colluding with the Russian government. Days after Attorney General William Barr released his summary of the Mueller report, all nine Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee called for the beleaguered House Intel Chairman’s resignation at a public committee hearing.

Rep. Mike Conaway, R-T.X., read aloud from a scathing letter signed by his nine fellow GOP lawmakers. “Your willingness to continue to promote a demonstrably false narrative is alarming,” he said. “The findings of the special counsel conclusively refute your past and present exertions, and have exposed you of having abused your position to knowingly promote false information.”

“Your actions both past and present are incompatible with your duty as chairman of this committee,” Conaway added. “As such, we have no faith in your ability to discharge your duties in a manner consistent with your constitutional responsibility, and urge your immediate resignation as chairman of the committee.”
