Hollywood Actresses Arrested for Paying for Kids to Get Into Elite Colleges

“These parents are a catalog of wealth and privilege.”

Actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were among those charged Tuesday in a bribery scandal involving some of America’s most elite colleges, including Ivy League schools such as Yale University.

According to the US Attorney’s office, a California businessman was running an operation that helped students get into their preferred college. Parents would pay the man an agreed upon sum of money, which he would then send to SAT or ACT test administrators or college sports coaches.

If the money went to a coach, the coach would create a fake student-athlete admissions profile. If the money went to a test administrator, the administrator would have a “smarter” student take the test or in some cases correct the tests themselves.

“These parents are a catalog of wealth and privilege,” U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling said in a statement announcing the case.

“For every student admitted through fraud, an honest and genuinely talented student was rejected,” Lelling said.

Huffman and her husband, William H. Macy, allegedly paid $15,000 to the Key Worldwide Foundation to participate in the the entrance exam cheating scheme. According to the indictment, their daughter was given twice the amount of time to take the SAT, while a proctor agreed to correct answers.

Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, allegedly paid $500,000 to have their two daughters designated as recruits for the USC crew team, even though neither of them participated in crew. Giannulli was also charged in the case.

While there was no indication the colleges themselves were involved in the scam, some of the indictments do include college coaches.

According to TMZ, Huffman was arrested and is currently in custody. She will be released on a signature bond, with promises to later appear in court.

Huffman, who is best known for her role in Desperate Housewives, also sparked controversy for taking on a role as transgender woman in the comedy-drama film “Transamerica.”

Loughlin is best known for her role as Rebecca in the long-running ABC sitcom “Full House.”
