New CNN poll finds that a majority want to see the new Republican nominee for president in 2024. The poll is coming as Trump’s former president announces his decision in September and Republicans raise the alarm. Some GOP members desire the midterm elections to focus on the economy and the failures of the Biden administration. However, they fear that if Trump makes his announcement before the midterms it will encourage Democrats and Independents alike to vote for Democrats.
The poll question was: “Who do you think the Republican Party should nominate as the party’s candidate for president in 2024?” Those who were polled were Republicans/Republican-leaning independents who are registered to vote.
Respondents polled thought Trump should be the GOP nominee. 55 percent believed a different candidate should, with 1% not having an opinion. A poll was conducted between January and February. Trump was at 50%, with a candidate of 49 percent. One percent did not have an opinion.
The tide seems to be turning. But, if there are former Vice President Mike Pence (Maryland Governor Larry Hogan) and ex-United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley in the field, then the vote could split between them, leading to Trump being the nominee. The race could turn out to be more close than you expected, if Trump takes on Pence and if Ron DeSantis of Florida enters the sweepstakes for 2024 White House.
As I previously reported, Trump has already decided whether he will run for President in 2024; the “big decision” is whether to announce before or after the midterm elections.
This same poll question was posed in 2018, where “All Republican/Republican-leaning adults” surveyed showed 74 percent wanted the GOP to re-nominate Trump, 21 percent wanted a different candidate, and five percent had no opinion.
It’s interesting to see how the poll has shifted. 2016 saw some voters not wanting to declare publicly they would vote Trump. In 2022, it seems some might not want to publicly say they won’t vote for Trump in 2024.
A GOP agent said that Trump wanted to make a White House bid earlier than usual to prevent DeSantis’s announcement of his presidential run. According to GOP polls Trump is leading, while DeSantis ranks second almost every time.

However, the host of “The Matt Walsh Show” podcast posted a poll on Twitter as to who the next GOP nominee should be. DeSantis won more than 70% of the votes, with over 172,000 voters voting.
Which person would you choose in 2024?

We will see an intense race between Trump and DeSantis if there is a Trump-DeSantis matchup.
