Liberal media outlets will become more liberal, that is one thing for sure. One example: The Baltimore Sun recently dropped Cal Thomas (syndicated columnist, and highly popular conservative writer) from its editorial board.
The Sun did not make much of it. The Sun made it public with a statement in a letter addressed to the editor. That letter was headlined “Kudos to The Sun for dropping Cal Thomas.”
Subtle.
The writer, Randy Barker of Baltimore, complained about a Thomas opinion piece about Kamala Harris and wrote how he was thrilled that the paper was discontinuing Thomas’ column. “I have just learned of the Sun’s decision to not publish him. With this letter, I want to make readers aware of the Sun’s principled decision.”
Sun Publisher & Editor-in-Chief Trif Alatzas did not respond to a request for comment. He should care. There aren’t many conservative voices in the Sun, so it is not as if they care. One less liberal Sun opinion doesn’t matter to them.
Thomas is an author and columnist for conservatives. Thomas was a Fox News correspondent for almost two decades. He has also published more than a dozen books. His most-recent one came out in January, 2020, and is titled “America’s Expiration Date: The Fall of Empires and Superpowers . . . and the Future of the United States.”
His syndicated column has been in existence for more than 37 years. His most recent column, which doesn’t appear on the Sun website, focused on the “Jussie Smollet Hoax.” I guess finding out about media bias was more than the Sun readership and liberal staff could handle.
The Sun founded in 1837 has become the most dominant newspaper in Maryland, but it is now a leftist shadow. Its Evening Sun sister publication, the Sun, used me to distribute newspapers. My first job after college was as a copy editor at No. 1 competitor — The Baltimore News American. Both papers are no longer in existence.
The Sun was the liberal newspaper even back then. The sports sections of the Sun are now being overshadowed and dominated by local sports coverage. The paper has seen staff cuts in recent years. Alden Global Capital bought the Sun in May along with Tribune Publishing.
Alden has been criticized in the news sector. It is known as ”a hedge fund with a reputation for slashing costs and cutting newsroom jobs,” according to The New York Times. It’s also called “free market reality”.
The Sun’s basic truths aren’t affected by a smaller staff. This paper is still liberal and has provided readers with yet another illustration of how liberal it can be.
If you’d like to lobby the Baltimore Sun to bring Cal Thomas back, you can write a letter to the editor or contact them on their Facebook page or Twitter account. Cal’s columns also appear on NewsBusters each week.
