Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced Saturday that one of the department’s stations received a “criminal threat against the lives of our deputies.”
Villanueva noted the threat was made on Friday and might have been caused by “false statements” at an oversight commission meeting at Loyola Marymount University. It’s no secret that leftist activists in Los Angeles County want to defund the police; some of them want to abolish the police altogether. This type of rhetoric leads to such situations. It isn’t the first time LASD deputy officers were in danger of being attacked.

The West Hollywood City Council decided to reduce LASD funding in the next two budget year. These city councils defended their decision of defunding the LASD and LAPD, saying their goal was to “put that money in other social services.” Defunding law enforcement has led to more crime, fewer arrests, and a disgraced DA in George Gascon, who victimized criminals and dismissed many victims and families of those victims’ pleas to not reduce criminals’ time in prison and instead to make our streets safer.
Lauren Meister, West Hollywood mayor was unhappy about the council’s decision to cut funding for the LASD because crime continues to increase in the area.
“Most of the residents and businesses I have heard from are opposed to cutting the sheriff’s budget … They are outraged that people and organizations from outside our city are dictating to council how to run our city.”
Although West Hollywood residents are opposed to the LASD being defunded because crime rose 137% in the previous year, Sepi Shyne, the incoming mayor, said that it was time for the LASD to be defunded. She stated that they had spoken about reimagining police and they should act accordingly.
“We have talked for two years about re-imagining policing … You just can’t say it without actually doing it. Period.”
But slowly, but surely, those calling for the defunding of law enforcement are realizing this is not an option and will never work. Minority communities are the ones most affected.
It is time to stop the war on law enforcement. All of the law enforcement rhetoric has resulted in a criminal threat to LASD deputies. The sheriff’s office’s major crime unit is investigating the incident. Sherriff Villanueva released a statement regarding the matter.
“Last night, East Los Angeles Sheriff Station received a criminal threat against the lives of our deputies. We take this threat seriously and are taking precautions. The investigation has been taken over by Major Crimes Bureau detectives. They will continue to evaluate the threat while the investigation progresses. The threat was possibly inspired by false statements made during a civilian oversight commission meeting held yesterday at Loyola Marymount University.”
It’s worth noting that Villanueva has opposed disgraced George Gascon from the very beginning. Villanueva’s soft-on crime approach, and the danger that sheriff deputies and police officers are in is one reason.
