Yesterday Joe Biden met with Vladamir Poutine to try to persuade him not to invade Ukraine. Since months Russians have increased their presence at the border and threatened to enter the Eastern European country like they did with Crimea in 2014.
What happened to that meeting? Well, the White House wouldn’t allow the press to observe it and refused to provide a read-out (remember when that was a scandal under Donald Trump? However, Russia allowed some media to enter their premises. We know this because Biden forgot to turn on his microphone when he started the proceedings. All indications suggest that the discussion moved on to sanctions and other consequences.
We got more details from President Obama today as he spoke for approximately two minutes to the media. Biden started his remarks by laughing, then he went into the tough guy routine that no one wants.
BIDEN: “If in fact he invades Ukraine, there will be…economic consequences like none he’s ever seen…His immediate response was he understood that…The idea the United States is going to unilaterally use force to confront Russia invading Ukraine is not in the cards right now.” pic.twitter.com/W9pXoMy2t1

Keep this man down in the basement, for the love of everything holy. This is not a compliment for Putin. Biden is unprepared for the moment. Presidents need to have sharp minds and be able to project power. Biden portrays a sense of senility. When he attempts sounding tough it comes across as forced and cringey. This performance must have been laughable for the Russians.
In that sense, letting Biden rant about “serious consequences,” while at the same time giving up the leverage of possibly using force, is dangerous. There should be some uncertainty as to what the US President will do. Instead, Biden rushes to rattle his saber about…economic sanctions?
I can assure you if there’s one thing Putin doesn’t care about, it’s economic sanctions. Not only have those been tried in the past to little or no effect, but Putin’s financial hand has only gotten stronger now that the Nordstream 2 pipeline has been greenlit by the Biden administration. If we wanted to put the brakes on Russia’s ambitions, the time to do that was almost a year ago. Germany is unlikely to support the extension of the pipeline, as they are putting so much hope in it’s completion.
In summary, there’s a difference between sounding tough and having the credibility to be tough. Biden is a legend in his own mind, but that’s where the tale ends. He is an intimidating figure that should not be ignored. His inability to move around and look at the camera, as he did today only makes it easier for his adversaries to fire back. Biden actually projects more strength when he’s in hiding than when he speaks. That’s not great, Bob.
Regardless of your feelings about the previous election, elections can have serious consequences. Biden is the president, and he’s obviously not fit for the job. Putin sees that and he’s going to take advantage of the situation. The same is true for China’s Xi Jinping as he eyes Taiwan. There’s a reason these tyrants are making their moves now and not when Donald Trump was president. There’s a lesson there that a lot of Biden voters would do well to learn. That’s probably too much to ask, though.
