Rep. Jackie Speier on Thursday said that Iran’s shooting down of a Ukrainian airliner was collateral damage from President Donald Trump’s killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.
“If what is being projected is true, this is yet another example of collateral damage from the actions that have been taken in a provocative way by the president of the United States,” Speier told CNN.
CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer had asked Speier if she believed Iran confused the commercial flight for a U.S. military plane, suggesting that “it certainly sounds like it was a mistake by the Iranians.”

U.S. officials are confident the crash, which resulted in the deaths of all 176 people on board, was caused by an Iranian missile, possibly fired accidentally.
