It Turns Out Most Democrats Don’t Want Joe Biden Anywhere Near Their Campaigns – Opinion

This probably shouldn’t shock you. It didn’t shock me. It is fascinating that an outlet such as the Washington PostSo brazenly would they set out to prove that it.

In a piece titled “As Biden turns toward midterms, he may not be the top surrogate,” the PostI surveyed numerous Democrats, looked through their social media accounts and websites and found that Joe Biden seemed to be very unpopular in this midterm cycle. Only a handful of the 60 Democrats they surveyed said that they would like Biden or anyone else from his government to campaign alongside them.

He’s being attacked more often in televised ads than Obama was at this point in 2010, or Trump was in 2018. On Democratic campaign websites, and on Twitter, he is largely unknown. And candidates in key races in battleground states are either not asking him to come — or actively avoiding him when he does, according to a Washington Post survey of more than 60 candidates in the most competitive gubernatorial, U.S. Senate and congressional campaigns in the country.

Biden was not asked if they would like to run for their district or state in the campaign. Post also asked candidates whether they would like Vice President Harris to act as surrogate campaigner under the Biden administration. It received the same response.

This is the exact week Biden intends to go on the road to tout his achievements for the American people.

White House officials are preparing to use the coming weeks to showcase some of Biden’s recent accomplishments, which include a sweeping law that lowers prescription drug prices, addresses climate change, and reduces the deficit.

They explain that Biden used special interests to fix problems Democrats sought for years. Biden will travel across the nation to promote his wins, push a Democratic agenda and talk about what Republicans might do if they win control. They believe that Biden, who they view as the quarterback of the party’s policies and its political future, will be a sought-after commodity.

I mentioned this a bit on Friday when pointing out that Ron Klain is really fired up about the idea that this is a “season of substance” that the Democrats can run on. Yet, few are willing to do it. Why is this?

A while ago we saw the latest poll of NBC News. It showed that Republicans are up 2 percentage points over Democrats (47 to 45). This is the poll. Also shows is that 74 percent of voters think the country is on the wrong track versus the 21 percent who think we’re on the right track. Biden is 13 points below average in terms of his approval rating, which was between 42-55.

There is a possibility that your party will be the leader of the next midterm elections. When the leader of your party, the President of the United States, is that deep underwater and when that many people are upset with the current trajectory of the country, you try to keep the face of all your party’s problems off your stage. And, yes, Biden is the face of all the Democrats’ problems right now.

He’s not the cause, but he’s the one in charge. His actions are his alone.

This is where the Democrats are at the top of their game. Biden was able to get the American Rescue Plan (a bipartisan legislation on infrastructure) and the climate change bill passed through Congress. However, none of these victories have put Americans in a better place than before Biden took office. Many Americans are now in worsening conditions than they were before he took office.

So the Democrats can stand on a stage in front of their voters and say what they have done and what they will do, but Biden’s a drag on their poll numbers. They can’t really afford to have him on stage with them, or in their ads, or even mentioned for fear that it will hurt their re-election chances.

And that’s a definite “ouch” for someone who used to be so incredibly popular within his own party.
