Huge Ruling in New York Rains Fire and Brimstone on Democrat Redistricting Hopes – Opinion

A timely ruling today out of New York has solidified GOP redistricting gains after the state’s appeals court sided with Republicans to strike down a Democrat gerrymander that ignored state law.

Because I said timely because I wrote an article just hours prior to this piece pointing out that Republicans had reversed the trend after months of Democrat celebrations regarding redistricting. Republicans actually won the war, contrary the earlier claims that Democrats had gained between 5-6 and 6 seats.

As I have already mentioned, one more battle was going on. It was this appeal out New York. The appeal was taking place after another decision in late March, when Republicans were back in control. It is now secured by Republicans, with huge implications.

This ruling contains three major points that all benefit Republicans going into the November midterms.

First is the fact the Democrat gerrymander has been struck down. That wasn’t expected, and has put Republicans in the money. The court also ordered the implementation of a new map this year. This differs from other states which decided that they ran out of time. The court also ordered that a new map be created for the year 2022. Thirdly, it will not be the New York legislature which is heavily Democrat. Rather, a court-appointed figure will do so based on the state’s fair districting provisions.

Take all of that and we could see a swing in several districts to the GOP, in one of our bluest states. That means that far from Democrats “winning” redistricting, Republicans could now walk away with a 3-5 seat advantage before the first vote is cast. Can you say “red wave”?

According to my knowledge, Democrats have nothing to lose. The pending cases relating to redistricting have been resolved or won’t be an issue until 2024. Wow, what a remarkable turnaround the GOP has made in the past month. We are moving at full speed towards November.
