Holt Peppers AG Garland with Questions on Possible Trump Indictment

On Tuesday night’s NBC Nightly NewsLester Holt, an anchor on the news, opened his interview with Merrick Grland (United States Attorney General). Instead of asking him about Hunter Biden’s many alleged crimes, Holt decided to pepper Garland with questions about the investigation into January 6, and the investigation into former President Trump and his alleged role in the riots that took place.

“After holding the attention of millions of TV viewers this summer, the recent pause to the January 6 hearings into the attack on the capitol have turned attention now to the Department of Justice and Attorney General Merrick Garland to provide what could be the next act in this American, legal, political, and constitutional drama,” Holt said while practically drooling with excitement.

“Let’s start off and talk about January 6. This week, we have just seen weeks worth of horrific witness testimony regarding what took place prior to January 6, and the subsequent events. Just as an American, can you tell me what your impression was of what we heard?” Holt asked in his first question during the sit-down interview.

“It is an important part of democracy that every American recognizes the truth of what happened on January 6 and the time surrounding it. I think that this is an important part that we not downgrade or suppress how important that day was” Garland explained.

The Attorney General added that he thought “the hearings did an extremely good job of reminding us, and for people who didn’t know in the first place, telling us how important that day was and what a risk it meant for our democracy.”

Holt then asked “is the committee offering you anything in terms of an informal road map? Are you learning things you didn’t know?” To which Garland replied, “The Justice Department has been doing the most wide-ranging investigation in its history and the committee is doing an enormously wide-ranging investigation as well.”

He noted that “it is inevitable that there will be things that they find before we have found them. And it is inevitable that there will be things we find that they haven’t found.”

Moments later, Holt repeated the common leftist complaint that Garland isn’t moving fast enough to charge Trump with a crime: “you said you’re moving quickly at this. The DOJ has come under a lot criticism and pressure. They are behind the curve in power here, they have fallen behind the committee. Not moving quickly enough on what appears to be solid evidence in some cases.”

Garland assured his pals in the Democrat Party that “we have been moving urgently” in the investigation and “it is inevitable in this kind of investigation that there will be speculation about what we are doing, who we are investigating.”

Desperately hoping for a DOJ indictment, Holt eagerly asked “would a criminal referral from the committee carry a lot of weight? Would it be welcomed by the Department of Justice?”

Not taking Holt’s bait, Garland explained “that’s totally up to the committee. We will have the evidence that the committee has presented and whatever evidence it gives us.”

Hoping to calm the fears of leftist Democrats who are afraid Garland won’t indict Trump if he’s a candidate for President, Holt asked Garland: “You said in no uncertain terms the other day that no one is above the law. However, indicting a former President or candidate for President could arguably cause the country to fall apart. Is that your concern?”

“We pursue justice without fear or favor. We intend to hold everyone, anyone who was criminally responsible for events surrounding January 6 or any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another accountable,” Garland responded.

As if Garland’s answer wasn’t clear enough, Holt asked the question again in a different way, “so if Donald Trump were to become a candidate for President again, that would not change your schedule or how you move forward or don’t move forward?”

A frustrated Garland answered that “we will hold accountable anyone who is criminally responsible for attempting to interfere with the transfer, legitimate lawful transfer of power from one administration to the next.”

This is how NBC dealt with Trump Attorney General Bill Barr. It was an extremely hostile interview from every angle. Republicans are subject to a general grilling, while Democrats feel friendly pressure.

LESTER HOLT: The Capitol attack has captured the attention of many millions of viewers on TV this summer. However, the recent pause in January 6th hearings have brought attention to the Department of Justice. Attorney General Merrick Grland will now provide the next act of this American, political, legal and constitutional drama.

The Attorney General was under increasing pressure to indict Mr. Trump, and his close friends. I spoke with him today. He dismissed accusations that his office didn’t move quickly enough to create cases against the highest ranking members of the hierarchy. I also asked him if he was concerned about further divisions in the country.

Let’s talk about January 6! Just weeks ago, we saw some horrifying testimony regarding what took place before January 6, and the events that followed. Please, just as Americans, tell me about your impressions of what you heard.

ATTORNEY GENERAL MERRICK GGARLAND: I think it is important that all Americans recognize what actually happened on January 6th and its context. This is an essential part of democracy that must not be downgraded or hidden. The hearings were a great way to remind us and, for those who weren’t aware, tell us about how crucial that day is and the danger it poses for democracy.

HOLT: Does the committee offer you any kind of informal roadmap? Do you find yourself learning new things?

GARLAND, The Justice Department is conducting the largest-reaching investigation it has ever done and the committee continues to do a tremendously broad investigation. There will always be something they discover before we find them. We will always find things that they didn’t discover. However, the Justice Department is working hard to understand everything and bring to justice all those criminally responsible for interfering in the peaceful transfer power between administrations. It is fundamental to our democracy.

HOLT – You stated you were moving rapidly at this. A lot of criticism has gone out about the DOJ’s inability to keep up with the pace of the committee and the power curve. In some cases, not moving fast enough to examine what seems like solid evidence.

GARLAND – As I stated, we are moving fast. From the beginning. There are many prosecutors and agents involved in these cases. In this type of investigation, there is bound to be some speculation as to what we are doing and who we are looking into. We have our theories. There is a lot of speculation about our theories. This is because we are required to keep the public from seeing what we do. Two reasons are why we do this. We do this to ensure the civil liberties and privacy of those we’re looking into. The second goal is to protect the integrity and success of the investigation.

The HOLT question is: Is a criminal referral made by the committee a significant weighty matter? The Department of Justice would welcome it?

GARLAND The evidence the committee presents and any other evidence will be available to us. From a legal perspective, I do not think the way they present information or the style of presentation is particularly important. That’s not to downgrade it or disparage it. It’s just that that’s not the issue here. Our own investigation is underway, based on the principles of prosecution.

HOLT However, indicting a former president or candidate for President could arguably cause the country to fall apart. Are you concerned? Do you need to consider these things as you decide on your next move?

GARLAND – We are committed to justice, without favour or fear. Everyone, any person who is criminally responsible or attempted to hinder the lawful transfer power between one administration and another should be held accountable. This is what we do. This is why we don’t give any thought to the other aspects.

HOLT: If Donald Trump became a presidential candidate again, would that change your plans or the way you move forward/no move forward?

GARLAND – I will repeat that we will prosecute anyone who attempts to interfere with the transfer or legitimate legal transfer of power from one government to another.

HOLT: What is the department doing to deal with this pressure? There is always a column in the newspaper about your day and what time you’ll do it.

GARLAND, The only pressure I feel or that of my prosecutors and agents is to do the right things. It’s how we pursue the rule of the law. It’s how we keep American citizens trusting in the rule-of-law, an integral part of democracy.
