Hollywood can send messages, but they are often slow to understand.
The industry cranked out a volley of anti-war movies during President George W. Bush’s presidency. Movies criticized the Iraq War and the President, as well as the U.S. soldiers who were fighting in foreign conflicts.
Each one bombed at box office.
Eventually, the industry realized it should stop making movies the public clearly didn’t want to see. A few pro-military films like “The Last Stand” were eventually made. Lone SurvivorAnd American SniperAdded to theaters
Both were hits. SniperA staggering $350 million was amassed in the United States.
Similar developments are happening in the wakeful Hollywood. Recent years have seen a number of originals, sequels, remakes, and new progressive reboots. Think:
- Charlie’s Angels
- It’s a Long Shot
- Late night
- Booksmart
- Terminator: Dark Fate
- And Just Like That…
- West Side Story
- There is no time to die
Some films featured in the above list were just as wakeful as they claimed to be. Others featured an aggressively woke marketing campaign, but the content itself didn’t fully reflect that framing. The film 007 There is no time to dieThis is an excellent example.
Each entry failed in different ways. There is no time to dieWhile it did very well in overseas markets, its Box Office fortunes suffered here compared to Bond’s recent outings.
And Just Like That…It received some harsh reviews after its debut on Dec. 9, while Cynthia Nixon, the co-star of the film, mocks the source material during press interviews.
West Side Story earned an anemic $10.5 million during its opening weekend, far below expectations given the IP involved as well as the man behind the camera – Oscar winner Steven Spielberg. The film’s media push focused on the film’s precise racial casting, the lack of English subtitles for select Spanish-language scenes and pushing past images of the source material.
(The media, like it always does. amplifies the wakeful messaging.
Latest TerminatorAnd Charlie’s AngelsFilms both at the box office and in other ways, have effectively destroyed each of their respective franchises.
Woke marketing often alienates movie goers. It’s not the only factor behind the aforementioned duds, but it clearly played a role.
Hollywood doesn’t intend to slow down.
Barbara Broccoli is the overseer of James Bond’s lucrative franchise and recently woke up 100%. Broccoli, asked by a podcaster if the next Bond actor could be “non binary,” suggested that casting choice wasn’t out of the question.
“Who knows, I think it’s open, you know? We just have to find the right actor,” the producer told Anna Smith on the Female Filmmakers podcast.
The response could have saved the franchise from a social media storm from its usual suspects. This response may also be indicative of the future for the franchise which has lost many fans through its progressive marketing and harsh tone. Plus, we still don’t know who the next James Bond actor will be, meaning the franchise needs to retain its core base above all.
These comments are not enough.
The starlet that was attached to this project indicates that it may take some time to recognise the next Snow White version.
Rachel Zegler (the West Side StoryBuzzFeed was assured by the alum that the updated version of the story would be reflected the times.
There’s not much I can say about it besides the fact that Snow White has constantly been criticized – even though she’s the original Disney princess and we love her so much – but criticized for existing solely for a prince, existing solely to be rescued….
I think that our director, Marc Webb, and everyone who’s working on this film has really taken her narrative and turned it into something that’s a lot stronger. And I’m very, very excited to be able to bring that to life.
Amazon’s recent “Cinderella” update proved so aggressively woke even liberal film critics trashed it.
Will the new “Snow White” suffer a similar fate?
What, more importantly, will Hollywood stars, marketers, and studios realize that pushing the woke agenda might actually push audiences away from them?
