Here Are the Republicans Who Voted for Gun Control Legislation Behind Your Back – Opinion

It is for this reason that I argue constantly that the primary elections are more important than any of the midterms. On Saturday, the Senate (including Republicans) passed legislation that made it harder for gun owners to get guns.

Ammoland News reported the following:

The Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act (VAWA) was passed by the U.S. Senate in the middle of the night. Several gun rights organizations raised concerns when the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act of 2022 (VAWA) was passed by Congress last year. It received Republican support. Republicans, such as Dan Crenshaw, claimed the bill’s anti-gun provisions would soon be repealed and accused Gun Owners of America of using fearmongering for fundraising.

Democrats and Republicans led by Senator Jodi Ernst negotiated the bill’s anti-gun provisions.

Many GOP senators pledged not to vote against the bill if it contained any anti-gun provisions. However, they ended up backing it. The measure was approved by Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith of Michigan. Her vote is remarkable because she made a statement to Ammoland News in which she vowed never to vote against such a proposal. The office of Cindy Hyde-Smith wrote:

Senator Hyde-Smith’s position on the Second Amendment has not changed.  It was a measure to maintain the functioning of the government and aid the Ukrainian people against an inept foreign dictator. Senator Hyde Smith does not support VAWA and will fight for Second Amendment rights.

Below is a complete listing of Republican senators who voted to support the bill.

Barrasso (R-WY)

Blunt (R–MO)

It might be a good idea to call or write any one of these legislators to let them know you feel. This could also motivate you to show up at the primary election and support sending ActualWashington, D.C.

You will be able to see why these people are important when you know what they include. The NICS Denial Notification act is included in this provision. It would allow federal authorities to send those with a negative background check to local and state law enforcement whenever they try to obtain a firearm license or purchase one. It is likely that these agencies will investigate any person denied a firearm or license to carry despite evidence of wrongdoing. This is a potential problem, considering that the majority of NICS denials made are false.

A second part of the bill would permit the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (ATF), to deputize law enforcement personnel to handle its dirty work. “This provision is a direct attack against states with Second Amendment Protection Acts (SAPA),” according to Ammoland News. These bills prevent state and local law enforcement agencies enforcing federal gun legislation. This provision allows the ATF to transform local police officers into federal officials, allowing them to circumvent SAPA laws.

A second provision would finance research into gun violence. While it sounds great, this is much more dangerous than it seems. Ammoland News has more:

The past has shown that research on gun violence is flawed. Instead of using scientific evidence to arrive at a conclusion and using it to support their conclusions, the government was caught using predetermined outcomes. Federal agencies would choose a conclusion and then work backwards using evidence that supports their position while disregarding evidence in opposition. This was exposed by Dr. Miguel Faria, a whistleblower who testified before Congress that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) had stopped funding gun violence research.

The fact that Republican senators would vote for such a proposal demonstrates one of two things: They don’t care what you think, or they didn’t think you would find out. This example shows how many “conservatives” in Congress will abandon their principles just to be politically expedient. They won’t stop until they pay the price for their duplicity in primary season.
