Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News’ reporter for the network has used his MSNBC host duties to show how hacky he is. He went from absolving Democrats of high-crime levels to attacking Republicans about redistricting in favor of Democrats.
Fill-in host for Tuesday’s Deadline: White HouseMohyeldin then spent an entire segment complaining that Republicans in Alabama tried to limit Democrats to one out of seven congressional district. He called this the “GOP’s assault on elections and democracy.” Then, Mohyeldin went to Joyce Vance, former Obama U.S. Senator and MSNBC legal analyst for reactions. Although she admitted that she wasn’t an expert on this issue but still gave commentary.
Like many other liberal journalists the analysis was self-contradictory as Vance complained about the state’s black-majority seventh district being oddly shaped, but she also wanted to create another black-majority district, which typically requires the drawing of oddly-shaped district. The truth is that the ungerrymandered compact districts had never been close to having a black majority in them in the 1980s. This was before the state engaged in racial Gerrymandering. The Almanac of American PoliticsIn the 1980s the sixth district, which included Birmingham and its surrounding counties, had only 31 percent of its inhabitants who were of African descent. This was the lowest percentage of all districts.
Since 1992, when Democrats started racial-gerrymandering, no other district has ever been created in this format. Notable is the fact that the GOP’s plan for the district appears almost exactly the same as the one used by Democrats back in 1990.
And a few days earlier during his eponymous weekend show, Mohyeldin bent over backwards to distance elected Democrats from rampant crime in cities they run. MSNBC’s host opened the segment with a reference to FoxNews.com’s article entitled, “12 major Dem-controlled cities set homicide records after a historically bloody 2020”.
He claimed that correlation doesn’t necessarily imply causation, and then cited an unidentified expert. However, the left can’t help but blame the increasing crime rate. One of their favourite boogeyman phrases is “defund the police.”
He was reminded of a flaky analysis that had been once given by Washington PostReporter Philip Bump admits that crime and Democrats often co-exist, but denies any cause and effect.
The conservatives point out that bail reform has helped criminals avoid prison and the possibility of re-offending. FoxNews.com reporter Emma Colton noted that he had mentioned, but didn’t quote from:
Some blame crime spikes on bail reform. They also point to a lack of arrests. Robert Boyce (retired chief of detectives at the New York Police Department) said that no one is being arrested any more. People are being arrested for gun possession and then they get released over and again.”
Notable is the fact that William Bratton, ex-NYPD Commissioner, appeared on MSNBC Reports last week with Stephanie Ruhle. He blamed his state’s past decade of crime policies for being soft. Bratton served as commissioner when New York City crime declined significantly in the 1990s.
E Trade funded Mohyeldin’s hacking analysis. They are linked.

Eastern Time: 8:44AYMAN MOHYELDIN: Year after year, voters consistently rank crime as one of their top issues. It’s not surprising that headlines such as this get a lot attention. “12 major Democrat controlled cities set new homicide records after a historically violent 2020.” However, headlines like these, let’s just be honest, do not tell the entire story. Let’s first look at this headline: “12 major Democrat controlled cities” While each of these cities is headed by a Democratic mayor in this article, experts caution against drawing direct lines between party control or crime. You may recall the old saying “Correlation doesn’t necessarily imply causality.” While it is true that crime tends to be higher in big cities, as well as the fact that Democrats are more popular in big cities, these two facts don’t necessarily have anything to do with each other. According to one expert, USA TodayHe said, “There are many Democrat-controlled places that aren’t on that list.” He suggested that such a cause-and-effect quote was “pretty irresponsible.”
The right can blame rising crime rates, but that does not stop them from using their favorite boogeyman slogan: “Defund the Police.”However, is this true? I’ll break it down for you. Progressive activists called for several police reforms after the 2020 murder of George Floyd in Minnesota by Derek Chauvin. The one that was proposed was to shift funds from the police department to programs for social services. This was known as “defund the Police.” Of the twelve cities that have seen record-breaking homicides, six reduced or diverted portions of their budgets for police. Six of the six other cities actually saw an increase in police spending. It is a difficult narrative to digest for the right. It does provide a better picture, even though I don’t know much about math.
Portland and Austin, two cities I listed that decreased or diverted spending following the defunding of the police movement, have increased their funding for police. This is the truth. The impact on the homicide rates of cities with diverted spending is not yet known. Experts don’t believe that defunding police causes an increase in homicides. A professor “who studies homicide” called “using one or two years of data to highlight a trend…’essentially useless'” since homicides are “rare relative to other crimes,” and she insisted multiple years of data is needed. Older data shows that police budgets and officer strength cannot predict the local crime rate.
This is what it means. Conservative media members are using data to craft their stories. That much is clear since they seem to be ignoring the host of experts point to other possibilities for the rise in homicide rates like pandemic-related factors, including the rise of firearm sales or economic stress.

MSNBC’s Deadline: White House
February 8, 2022
Eastern: 5:02 PMAYMAN MOHYELDIN – This means that the 2022 elections for the Alabama congressional seats will be held under a map created by Republican leaders in the state. It means that the 2022 elections in Alabama’s congressional election will be held under a map drawn by Republican leaders. GOP attack on democracy and electionsThis is the place where we begin this hour. This hour begins with the GOP’s attack on democracy and our elections. [INTRODUCES PANEL]Joyce, let me start with you. For you and all our viewers, I am putting this graphic up. This is a map the Supreme Court approved to be displayed. Talking — let’s talk a bit about what this ruling means for Alabama voters. We also want to know how redistricting could be affected elsewhere.
JOYCE VANESS: I am not an expert at redrawing maps using new census data. However, I do think you don’t have to be an expert in order to see the way it was drawn. These two arms reach out from the end of the last district to give black voters an opportunity to elect their representative. Those two arms that fall off of it that grab Birmingham in one claw and Montgomery in the other claw, and those are the two majority black cities in Birmingham, so you can — in Alabama — so you can see how easy it would be to have districts that better represented the population. This district is home to 25 percent of Alabama’s black population. However, it crams the majority of them into one district rather than dividing them into two. That is the conclusion of the three-judge panel. It is worth noting that I hate the characterization — of judges being Democrats or Republicans. It doesn’t fit, however, two judges from this panel were appointed in 2016 by President Trump. This is not a Democratic conspiracy or cabal. It is a recognition of the fact that Alabama had for far too long suppressed black voter rights, and that it was now time to rectify that.

MOHYELDIN – Talk to us about whether this ruling is a violation or not of the Voting Right Act.
MAYA WILEY NSNBC LEGAL ANALYST : It is Black History Month. We are talking about Alabama — the same state where the march from Selma to Montgomery, including Representative John Lewis, who everyone lionized in Congress — came from and at this juncture, what we’re seeing with this opinion is nothing short of yet another stab in the heart of voting rights.
