We brought to you Monday’s news about Benjamin Hall, a Fox News reporter who was injured in Kyiv. He is now being treated at a hospital. Hall’s vehicle was struck by incoming fire in Horenka.
Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott wrote a note Tuesday morning to share the heartbreaking news that Pierre Zakrzewski, a Fox News cameraman was shot and killed during the attack that wounded Hall.
Bill Hemmer’s on-air report from America’s Newsroom echoed Scott’s praise of Zakrzewski’s professionalism and dedication.
“We’ve got some very difficult news to share with you now. FOX News cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski has died in Ukraine. While working alongside our Benjamin Hall, an incoming fire struck their vehicle in Kyiv. This picture was taken with Steve Harrigan, and other capitalists just a few minutes ago. Pierre Zakrzewski was an absolute legend at this network and his loss is devastating. Pierre Zakrzewski has worked with us over many years, covering the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. Our CEO, Suzanne Scott, noted a few moments ago that Pierre jumped in to help out with all sorts of roles in the field – photographer, engineer, editor and producer and he did it all under immense pressure and with tremendous skill. Jay Wallace (FOX president) says everyone feels a certain sense of safety when arriving on set, because Pierre is there. Jay Wallace, president of FOX, said that Pierre was an expert, journalist and friend. We here at the Fox News Channel want to offer our deepest condolences to Pierre’s wife, Michelle, and his entire family. Pierre Zakrzewski was only 55 years old, and we miss him already.”
Scott noted that Zakrzewski received an award for helping freelancers evacuate Afghanistan.
“Last year, he played a key role in getting our Afghan freelance associates and their families out of the country after the U.S. withdrawal. In December at our annual employee Spotlight Awards, Pierre was given the ‘Unsung Hero’ award in recognition of his invaluable work.”
Fox News Foreign Correspondent Trey Yingst took a photo with Zakrzewski and shared it to show his sadness.
I don’t know what to say. Pierre was an exceptional person. Selfless. Brave. Passionate. I’m so sorry this happened to you. pic.twitter.com/IvxlPWGDAl
