The 2022 midterm elections are just one year away. It might be time to take a look at how candidates who are competing to become the GOP’s Governor candidate are faring. At least, in the Department of CASH.
The Michigan primary to select who will be facing incumbent Gretchen Whitmer is August 2nd, 2022 — just 275 days away. So, let’s go to the tote board to see who is in the (money) race.

James Craig, an ex-Detroit Police Chief reported raising over $1.42 million this quarter. He beat 11 other GOP candidates to be Michigan Governor.
Craig reported for his first quarter last quarter, having opened his campaign committee back on July 7.
“I’m humbled and honored at the outpouring of support we are seeing from Michiganders across this state,” Craig said in a statement.
Craig was widely regarded as the favorite for winning the GOP primary. He received contributions from John Engler and Rick Snyder, former Michigan GOP governors.
Kalamazoo’s chiropractor Garrett Soldano finished second in the GOP contest, having raised more than $495,000.979 for this quarter. He has already raised more than $1.1million through his grassroots campaign. “I’m incredibly proud of this campaign and grateful to our supporters who contribute to our vision for a better Michigan,” Soldano said in a news release.
James Craig is a former Detroit top cop who has brought in nearly 1.5 million dollars. But, he is not in the top spot as an absolute certainty. Trailing him is a gentleman by the name of Garrett Soldano, who was one of the leaders of pushing back against the COVID shutdown that Whitmer shoved down this state’s throat.
It is worth noticing that Whitmer doubled Craig’s value and that she has considerable war cash. Plus, Whitmer will not be challenged in the race by her own party.
Meanwhile incumbent Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer raised more than $3.1 million last quarter, bringing her reelection campaign’s fundraising total to a record-breaking $17 million this cycle.
Never underestimate Michigan’s ability to seize a great opportunity. Whitmer is a wealthy woman, but Whitmer can still be beat due to her horrible job done since COVID.
Gretch was recently caught at Washington, D.C., not wearing her mask in a bar. This brought back memories from when Gretch did it here. Even with her embarrassing state reply not far behind us, we still believe she can win reelection.
The best way to prevent this is for the GOP leadership to stay out of the primary and allow the contest to be decided among the candidates. The party’s grassroots members, who make up its backbone, will not vote if they feel that the balance is being tilted in any way. They will simply sit down and do it again. This would spell doom for the state, and Whitmer will win easily.
My worries were covered in this piece I posted the other day. Michigan Has a Glut of GOP Candidates Filing a Year Before the 2022 Elections — Can They Win?This is because the general point here is true. Will the GOP do a shoot-itself-in-the-foot maneuver, as it has done before?
From that article…
Sometimes, Michigan displays bright purples that can make people think we’re a trendy-red state. In a very fast, loud, and vocal voice, I disagree. John Engler was the last Republican governor we had. He left office in 2002. Rick Snyder’s name had an R. He was elected as a Democrat more than a Republican. He finally made that “transition” official when he endorsed Joe Biden in the last Presidential election Finally, the last Republican Senator in this state was there for one term and left office in 2001. We’ve had many impressive candidates challenge the dull dudes here, but they lose.
I have not yet entered a horse into the race. I’m looking forward to seeing the contenders make their arguments for Gretchen Whitmer.
I just hope they do it soon, so the nominee can start teeing off on Whitmer’s record for the past three years.
