Former “journalist” Kate Smith did such a good job pushing the pro-choice narrative while on her abortion beat at CBS News that last month Planned Parenthood hired her to be their director of “news content” (aka propagandist). And on Mother’s Day Sunday, she appeared on CNN’s Trustworthy Sourcesfalsely claimed that the United States would be exactly like El Salvador. She also said that women who have miscarriages will find themselves in American prisons. Her criticism of her promotion in her job track was also a slam on conservatives.
After some easy questions about why she left CBS (she claimed her editor was no longer interested in her beat) and what she does now for the nation’s largest baby-killing operation, Stelter brought up the criticism from conservatives by citing a National Review article (from over 2 years ago) calling her “Planned Parenthood’s Ambassador to CBS News.”
Smith dismissed the national magazine as just an online blog and suggested long-time journalist reporter Alexandra DeSanctis Marr simply doesn’t “realize all of the different layers that someone goes through before they publish a piece before they go on-air.”
“We have standards, we have lawyers,” Smith declared. “Before anything goes on-air, there’s a thorough review of what’s going on. So, I stand by every article I write.”She refused to back down, suggesting that those who criticize her are just ignorant. “Again, I think these people just don’t understand how newsrooms actually work, they don’t have that kind of experience.”
Smith may not be aware that Smith was part of the network that produced Dan Rather’s fraudulent documents and the scourge against George W. Bush.
Stelter asked Smith to examine her past reporting and explain why the United States would become an anti abortion hellscape just like El Salvador.
“When we went to El Salvador, what we saw is all of those things that these doctors and politicians had warned us about were happening real-time on the ground,” she declared.
Smith made a joke about the possibility that many women in America would die from abortions, ignoring the fact all states have an exception to protect the mother’s life.
Talking to my doctor, he explained everything in clear terms. he has had patients die – has had patients die – because he wasn’t allowed to give them an abortion that would have saved their life. We saw – We met with a doctor who is giving abortions illegally and he was saying there’s been absolutely no difference in demand for abortions, whether it’s legal or not. It doesn’t matter.
Smith wondered if American women might be sent to jail for miscarriages, despite the fact that the U.S. justice system is better than that in El Salvador.
And then most… really like keeps me up at night is when I spoke to the women who were in prison for having an abortion and there were some in there who had not seen their family in years because this prison is in such a dangerous place that their family can’t visit. And they say they had a miscarriage, and they woke up – they had an obstetric emergency – and they wake up and they’re shackled to the hospital bed and there’s a police officer in there investigating them.
Doctors can’t tell the difference, and I know this because they look at patients. It’s impossible to tell the difference. It is a medical fact.
“This isn’t a theory. There is no need for speculation. We have actual facts that can inform what happens,” Stelter refused to back down, and she stated her opinion to Stelter.
For what it’s worth, before speaking with Smith, Stelter did have Montse Alvarado of the Catholic EWTN to talk about covering abortion through that Catholic and pro-life lens. She was both more interesting than he was critical.

CNN’s Trustworthy Sources

BRIAN STALTER: This year however, National Review, the conservative outlet, called you – two years ago, Planned Parenthood’s ambassador to CBS. The claim was that you were acting as a reporter, creating news articles more like press releases. That was your CBS charge, and Planned Parenthood is now charging you with the same thing. You were accused of bias in CBS reporting by some conservatives. How did you respond?
KATE SMITH (former CBS, now Planned Parenthood news content director): Look, if you’re a blogger online you might not realize all of the different layers that someone goes through before they publish a piece before they go on-air. We have standards. And we have lawyers. There is a detailed review before any program airs. Every article that I write is my guarantee.
That accusation is a blatant lie. Anybody who doesn’t fall by their rules, who isn’t anti-abortion, is against them. So, if you’re trying to cover this from a neutral point of view and you’re including both sides, they automatically think you are against them because they view doctors as anti – excuse me, for abortion. These doctors are considered biased by them.
All of that criticism I have received is absolutely unacceptable. Again, I think these people just don’t understand how newsrooms actually work, they don’t have that kind of experience. However, I completely disagree with that critique.
STELTER: While at CBS, I mentioned your trip to El Salvador. Was there anything you have learned and how can it be applied to the U.S. today?
SMITH: Yeah. The reporting trip to El Salvador was eye-opening. It really helped me understand what was happening on the ground. The reporting trip took place in 2019. At the time, none of the six-week bans on abortion, or the extreme ones, had been implemented yet. The only information we received was from politicians, doctors, and others about what would happen if an abortion ban went into effect.
What we found was that the same things doctors and politicians warned about, were all happening right on-the-ground in El Salvador.
I spoke to a doctor who, in no uncertain terms, told me he has had patients die – has had patients die – because he wasn’t allowed to give them an abortion that would have saved their life. We saw – We met with a doctor who is giving abortions illegally and he was saying there’s been absolutely no difference in demand for abortions, whether it’s legal or not. It doesn’t matter.
It is an observable medical fact.
It’s up to the judge to make the decision. They claimed that they were innocent. And as a proof point, many of those patients – excuse me, many of those women who were in prison, they have since been released because there wasn’t enough evidence to put them in prison.
All of the things we have said might occur if abortion is banned, or made illegal. This is not speculation. This is not a speculation. There are actual facts available that will help us predict what might happen.
STELTER: Kate, thank you very much.
