When the Sun-Sentinel is this unhinged over a parents’ rights law it is time to switch to full comic strip content.
To say that the over-the-target-reaction to Florida’s HB1557 law has been extreme is to traffic in understatement. Nationwide, the journalism complex has been steadfastly lying about the legislation, resorting to the misnomer “Don’t Say Gay Bill” for weeks, as they trot out adults claiming they are being silenced, or even threatened, because the state wants the same content standard in kindergarten classes that is applied to Disney cartoons.
Now, with the bill’s passage, and Governor Ron DeSantis poised to sign the law, local paper the South Florida Sun-Sentinel has lost all control. In a new column from the paper’s editorial board, they lash out at the bill, call for the resignation of the governor’s spokesperson, and make themselves out to be consummate fools in the process. It is a shameful journalistic error.
From the first, there is an emotional explosion, complete with the headline singing. Editorial.| Editorial. Two problems are already present, and we have not yet gotten to the content. As has been pointed out ad nauseam, there is no reference to “gays” in the bill. Those racing to call this “anti-gay” need to ignore that this also would encompass heterosexual talk in classrooms of the same nature.
As for those “disastrous results”? Uh, No. It is impossible to attribute any results to bills that have not been signed or even implemented. Relax, as all that you’ve done is to predict what the future will look like based only on emotions, and not show anything concrete. The use of “bashing” displays this, as nothing in the bill can be accurately described with this charge.
To open their screed, the editors go after DeSantis press secretary Christina Pushaw, because she dared to describe those pushing against this bill to be “groomers.” Granted, there may be some extreme application there, but for the paper to gasp and swoon over such language is precious, when we have seen for weeks those backing the bill described as “homophobes,” and worse. USA Today columnist, one wrote that he wished the bill’s creator would be struck with a tornado. Our Sister Toldjah is able to attest.
You don’t have to be outraged. Actually, I feel sorry for you. You can see that I am able to have a disagreement with others without wanting their homes and lives destroyed. Take a look at yourself. https://t.co/JgvG6cSoav

The Sun-Sentinel lists other alleged aggressions of Ron DeSantis. This adds more weight to already thin allegations. This is what you need to keep in mind. The same paper as weeks agoDeSantis’ name was claimed. a Nazi sympathizerHe recognized Holocaust Remembrance Day in a synagogue just days before. Against antisemitism, they now go on to claim that he is trying to expunge the teaching of slavery and black history, charging he has “effectively banned any honest teaching about the influence of slavery in American life and the endurance of racism in contemporary America.”
Is it too much to ask for a journalism outlet to do some research and look into the very topics it is covering – you know, committing the act of journalism? Florida already has laws in place regarding the teaching of children. HB1213Covers Educational Instruction of Historical Events. It was signed into law in June of 2020 – Ron DeSantis is the Governor.
It continues to state that Pushaw must resign because she has used inflammatory language. According to one senator from the state, this quote is: “She effectively called every single person who’s against this bill a sexual predator.” The obliviousness is that this was delivered in a hectoring editorial calling all supporters homophobes, mind you. But what makes this piece of journalism so delicious is that not only does the editorial board completely invalidate their own hyperbolic claims, they actually come close to making Christina Pushaw’s case. All of their outrages were put to rest by these editors in one move.

After making the claim that this law concerns “raw gay-bashing,” Un-cleverly, the editors inserted the text of the bill that they were slamming. This red-in the-face charge is disproven, since those words were not found anywhere. It also emphasizes the need to avoid topics that are not age-appropriate. However, the editorial board makes its biggest mistake.
This milestone in political evil does not simply prohibit teachers from addressing sexual and gender issues in grades K-3, which they haven’t even been doing. Teachers will be afraid to address questions of sexuality or gender identity at all ages, in any context.
(Record scratch sound effect)
I’m sorry now, What was it that?? Did you just write, “…which they haven’t even been doing”?! Is that what you meant to say? Therefore, you just said that it was hateful for a law trying to codify a practice that has already been established. It hasn’t been abusive or threatening to not teach these topics to Kindergartners, but it will be hateful to keep that standard in force. You have a great read about the topic, Gang.
It is the same argument that critics of Critical Race Theory use to claim it isn’t being taught. If that’s the case, then why would anyone want to stop it being taught? We could insert another sound effect here – Crickets.
What the Sun-Sentinel doesn’t grasp is that Christina Pushaw might have been more accurate than they thought. If these topics are not being taught today why are you so upset at a law mandating that remains the case – unless you have it in mind to begin doing so? This law has been criticized by editors who have said that these subjects are not being taught. want The K-3rd grades will be taught the subject of gender orientation and sexuality. That is why it is so.
They also wanted to share their knowledge with the younger ones about crickets based on the answers to that question.
