Editor’s Pick: Free Beacon on Alleged Russian Spy Working for Voice of America

Chuck Ross of the Washington Free Beacon wrote Saturday on the subject of the arrest of a freelance journalist working for Voice of America, a taxpayer-funded organization. “arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia” “at the Poland-Ukraine border.”

Poland’s internal security agency said Friday that Gonzalez was “conducting his business for Russia while taking advantage of his journalist status.” The counterintelligence agency said Gonzalez collected information for Russia’s spy service during his recent stay in Poland and that he planned to continue his activities in war torn Ukraine.

Gonzalez was identified as the cameraman in a Voice of America Feb. 4, 2014 story from Dnipro (a Ukrainian city).

Gonzalez, who was arrested two days after VOA’s report by Ukrainian officials, was charged with reporting from military-controlled territories without appropriate accreditation. Reuters reports that Gonzalez was also detained. After his initial arrest, he was freed within hours.
