We’re four months out from the November midterm elections, and with generic Congressional ballot polling continuing to favor Republicans, and with Joe Biden’s approval ratings languishing in the basement, frantic Democrats including those in Biden’s inner circle have increasingly relied on First Lady Jill Biden to come to the rescue of a party that is clearly on the ropes.
But as the recent “breakfast taco” debacle demonstrated, “Dr.” Jill Biden can come off just as clueless and out of touch as her husband often does during public appearances, which leaves the Biden White House with even fewer options headed into the fall campaign season.
And a new poll released Monday puts even more of a damper on Democrat hopes that Jill Biden can salvage her husband’s presidency – and their fall electoral chances – at this stage in the game:
According to a CNN/SSRS poll, First Lady Jill Biden’s approval rating has dropped 24 points over the last year and a quarter.
If asked their opinion on Mrs. Biden’s favorability or disapproval, 34% said they were favorable while 29% stated that they thought she was unfavorable. A further 37% were unconvinced.
The same poll team asked 58% the question in January 2021. They said that they had a positive opinion about Mrs. Biden.
Jill Biden’s numbers have fallen to a new low according to CNN polling. The company has been following her data since 2020 and this month. Jill Biden received a favorable 46% opinion from voters in a poll taken late August 2020. This reached a peak of 58% just before Joe Biden was elected to office in January 2021.
Throughout Joe Biden’s presidency, Jill Biden has increasingly had to step in and run interference as President Biden’s penchant for gaffes and flubs, and just generally looking out of it at times during speaking engagements has only gotten worse over the last 19 months. Not least, Jill Biden often had to correct Joe Biden’s misrepresentation of Vice President Kamala Harris. At certain points, Jill Biden has also played “director” in showing him which way he has to go when either being led off a stage or when he has to remain seated.
Jill Biden also saved Joe at times from uncomfortably asked questions by the media.
During a private DNC donor gathering earlier this month, Mrs. Biden reportedly whined about how the “problems of the moment” interfered with Joe Biden’s ability to do his job, problems that nearly every President throughout the course of American history has had to face at some point. Her role as First Lady wasn’t what she had expected it to be.
Biden stated that she felt similarly hamstrung as the first lady and was unexpectedly led in other directions than she had intended.
“I was saying to myself, ‘Okay, I was second lady. I was a teacher at community colleges. I have worked with military families. I’ve worked on cancer.’ They were supposed to be my areas of focus. We got a lot of other things. [in the White House,] I had to be, with all that was happening, the first lady of the moment.”
In other words, real life intruded just like it does for most average Americans, and Jill Biden just couldn’t deal.
If the poor polling she is having with her husband continues for two more years, then neither of them need to be concerned about that anymore. She can just go back to. ControllingInstead, Joe can be managed from their Delaware homes.
